Any one from PH team - please add the feature based on the likes this discussion gets Hi everyone, wondering why Product Hunt does not have a feature to message people here - would have been so helpful to discuss with fellow PH hunters/makers - right now would need to find them on LinkedIN and reach out which is painful!

a million dollar question :)

It's probably a lot of effort to implement and difficult to moderate. It will require a lot of A.I. to maintain so I think it will be expensive.
I think it's simply not the goal of this platform, most people leave their socials in their profiles so you can connect there, but I also wonder what's the actual reason behind it

maybe they still trying to figure out how to deal with the Spammologist... πŸ€”πŸ€”

@erick_philbert makes sense - would adding a filter for not allowing links/specific words shared help?
Erick Philbert
@rohit_kota yes, i think that might help, and they can limit number of a messages someone can send monthly...
Rohit Kota
@erick_philbert yeah nice idea and also have a report flag where someone can be banned from messaging for a time period based on reported activity so that their is incentive not to spam
Erick Philbert
@rohit_kota sure thing, this will help for people who will abuse the dm...

It would be amazing! Although I'm guessing they don't put it there because they don't want everyone spamming each other for upvotes

People began to communicate on other social networks to conduct their business on PH. If there was such an opportunity, it would save time.

Great Question, I think this is because the platform is dedicated to product hunting and not meant for casual messaging. Introducing messaging features could dilute its uniqueness, making it similar to other social media platforms. I think to preserve the originality of the product, they are not adding this feature.

Late answer for me but I'm here since few weeks and I have the same question. I believe it could be implemented in a simple manner to prevent spam: only people whom a user follows can send them a message.

good point. a messaging feature could foster deeper convos and connections. but also: potential for spam? moderation challenges? product decisions are tricky. trade-offs everywhere. still, direct communication can be super valuable. hope they consider it.

I thought about this last week when I found out a fellow hunter had launched on a platform I'm connected to. We need this message feature!

I agree that this would be so helpful. Like a DM system

Might be they don't want to bring this feature to keep people away from spam messages asking for upvotes.

@ruhi_singh__ Agree. Also if people want to be found they would have their LinkedIn profile on their account (like I have) - quite easy to add and they nudge you to add it when creating a profile on PH, so if it's not there maybe people don't want to make it as easily accessible.

@rohit_kota yes that's good idea actually

Maybe it's a way to fight bots and not let them fill your inbox with spam, but yeah, it's not a great way to deal with this problem.
Rohit Kota
@burmistrov any other solutions we can suggest? like filtering out links or specific words or certain activity?

It would be great if there was a message feature!

It would be fantastic! The reason they probably don't put it there, though, is that they don't want people to spam each other for upvotes.
Rohit Kota
@lucy_cox1 yeah, makes sense - they can have some limitations within messaging to handle it?...
