What do you think about Meta's move towards not fact-checking information?

I see this as quite a problem in principle.
Given the situation in society, where it is easier to create and spread AI content, many conspiracy theories can be spread that tear society apart.
Not to mention that advertisers' ads may find themselves in an environment that will harm the good name of their company.
What's your take on it?

I've spent 6 years working at Meta. Deepfake is a big thing it committed to tackle. But it's particularly hard now with genAI. There are quite some fact-checking startups, I think Meta and Google and other conglomarates should considering working with them/ acquiring them.

@kissonlin This will be a huge thing. Already some of our people (even constitutional officials and members of the government) started proclaiming in our country such things as "The Earth is flat". I am like, "okay" :D but... this can have a broader implications on the health sector and science development. This will be a very difficult era.
Social media ended in 2024. Now its "virtual media" Mostly bots talking to bots 😸
the problem is not that they back track on it. the problem is we don't see it anymore. what i mean is i read cnn, fox, hln, de standaard, and even there sometimes there are 2 different stories, so you can't know which is true or not. So if big companies need to spend a lot of money on fact checking without any return. Than it is a big problem. I have the feeling people don't care anymore. and in the big lines it will all be the same news, but from a different view. Even when you can proof if it is a lie, how will you ever debunk it if the other party is blind. I don't say it is a good thing, i just say i understand, You say ads, you know everyday i get ads on all kind of platforms about celebrities that are dead or share their crypto secret, these day with video of them speaking. If they already can't check these how would they be able to check all the content created. it is my 2 cents

@sietse_schelpe I know what you mean, I take it, and we all have a choice and not to be censored but if social media is used for extremism and even the organization of radical groups that can start causing harm, it is dangerous.
@busmark_w_nika i agree, but in their eyes we or others are the extremism. Maybe the problem is we stopped listening to each other

Hi Nika! Happy new year! This is extremely worrying. Lies can spread incredibly fast, misleading advertising from powerful lobbyists may influence the uneducated etc. It'll be a race to the bottom. Also the tech industry roll back of DEI initiatives, Meta, McDonalds etc all rolling back diversity initiatives. I just hope we don't regress and lose all the progress that has been achieved for minority groups and women in the workforce etc. Given we know about 60% of younger generations are suffering from mental health challenges, this is incredibly alarming.
I agree with Kisson, fact-checking tech that gains global reach/trust/accuracy fast will be important.

@emily_willis1 Hey Emily, how will you approach towards this? I know that some stopped using these socials to boycott the act. But what about kids? How can we help to "protect" them?

@busmark_w_nika We need to train our kids to think critically for themselves. A great eg of this happened today with my son (he's 12). He said to me out of the blue "Mum there's a new funnel web spider discovered that's twice as deadly & twice as big." So I asked him whether he'd fact checked it, & whether the source of the news was trustworthy etc. Was it a Youtuber, or was it a reliable media outlet etc. The other way is to 100% block all social media for kids (which I do!) - it's far too risky to let the tech algorithms loose on your kids' brains.

Critically thinking – I am happy that someone mentioned this because we neglect this thing :) This type of questioning does the trick. The source with media is one thing + we need to question them in terms of physics, math, history etc. because the science has answers. @emily_willis1
Meta is a problem. 'nough said!
