Thoughts on Mascots?

I was wondering if anyone is using a mascot to improve their branding. I feel like mascots are good for passing the 'tip of the tongue test'. For instance, think of Tony the Tiger, the embodiment of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, or the ever-cheerful Ronald McDonald from the world of fast food.
