I don't think anybody knows and everything is very speculative at the moment... The best one I heard on twitter was that there was something that Sam didn't discuss with the board but I don't believe it.

People are saying different things about it, According to a news article it is because of a power struggle between the company's two ideological extremes, one group is techno optimistic and the other fears that AI represents an existential risk to humanity.
