Where do you hire when scaling?

If you were to scale from 1 to 10 people in your team. You don't know anybody in the business. You live in the middle of nowhere. You're alone. You have a tiny budget and cannot afford to make long term contracts because you don't know how this business will turn out. - Do you use Upwork / Fiverr to find people? (mediocre in my experience) - Do you use Indeed and post an actual job on some job board site? (can be a pain with verifications and all) - Or where do you hire people to expand your team at the beginning when you're just starting to scale?

Interesting question, would to hear other people's thoughts. But I think this is how I would do it > First, try my hand at the task itself to understand what's required and who'd be a good candidate for it. Then at the start, I'd hire interns/freelancers for smaller - important but not critical things. If the job is well-defined and structured for them it's easier to get better outputs. They're also cost effective. I'd try to find them from university job boards, freelancer platforms apart from Fiverr/Upwork too. If it's something very critical that you're not good at (heading all the tech/business for instance) - I would start looking for a co-founder rather than finding temporary fixes and offer equity. Then as things grow, start hiring one by one some founding employees usually from platforms like Linkedin, Indeed (some other country specific platforms are also great)

Why not just give it a chance? Hire someone from Fiverr or Upwork for a relatively simple task. If they do well and are competent, give them a chance. Ultimately, could this rejection of hiring platforms be just a mental block, stopping you from hiring? If they don't perform well, no problem, move on to another person. These sites have people from both developed and developing countries. There's both great talent and people who are willing to promise anything for money. Do you want to grow your business and move forward, or do you want to be afraid to spend money and expand your team? Because despite AI and all the modern possibilities for a global and scalable business, you still need people.

@byalexai I have been in the online marketing space for 12 years, before Upwork there was Elance, for those of you old enough, you may remember it. In my experience the quality of freelancers there has gone very much down over the years. Of course you cannot generalize and surely there are some great talent also. But this is not the point. I have this option already. My question is more about **other** options. How do the best do? How do the guy who started Coinbase did go from 1 to 3 people? Or the guy who started Airbnb where did he find employee number 2 and 3? Or the guy who started ProductHunt.com, if you're reading this, where did you find your employee number 3 and 4? Are they using Upwork to find talent? Or many of you guys here with successful businesses and agencies. Are you using Upwork to find talent? I hope this is not one of those things where you cannot get straight answers because it's a competitive secret.

When scaling, recruiting through employment agencies can be extremely helpful. These agencies have access to a broad pool of candidates, which saves time and guarantees that you're meeting potential hires who are pre-vetted for skills and experience. For creative roles, I've had a great experience with Artisan Talent. Their focus on finding candidates who not only match the job description but also fit the company culture is impressive. If you're interested, apply to artisan talent customer service for assistance, they are very responsive and can guide you through the hiring process efficiently.

@emily_harris thanks Emily. Do you hire freelancers on Indeed as well, or do they need standard hiring and contracts?
