When goals are missed, should I lower them? Or keep the same goals?

Hey all! I just finished my "building in public" update on AIModels.fyi...(https://notes.aimodels.fyi/build-in-public-ai-models-july-2023/). Normally this is just an easy report I post on my blog but this month led me to a question I need your help to answer around how to set targets. CONTEXT: I share these updates to hold myself accountable, monitor progress, and learn from your feedback. For July 2023, here's how we did across some key metrics: Monthly Active Users (MAU): 6,700 (Target: 10,000 😕 Missed it by 33%) Engagement Time: 47s (Target: 60s ⏱️ Fell short by over 20%) Bounce Rate: 51% (Target: 50% 🎯 Just missed by 1%... very close) Newsletter Subscriptions: 465 (Target: 400 🎉 Exceeded by over 15%!) So we're clearly making strides but have some room for improvement. QUESTION: My question to this community is - When goals are missed, should I lower them? Or keep the same goals? Should I set a target closer to last month's growth rate of +10% (around 7500 or so)? Or should I keep my last goal? On the other hand: when goals are exceeded, should we get bold and raise targets? Or keep the same goals to nail that achievement? For example, newsletter subscriptions blew past 400 to 465. Do I set the next target at 500? 650? 800? Should I aim to exceed the prior month's performance or treat it as an anomaly? I'd love to hear your perspective and experience! What do you do when you miss a goal? What about when you crush one? What's worked for you guys? I'm committed to building AIModels.fyi out in the open and learning from this forum's wisdom. Let me know your thoughts on setting ambitious but achievable targets!
