What's the best way to learn design?

Question

For context, I'm a technical founder whose product seriously depends on design (conveying a vision). I use tailwind css and component libraries like shadcn, but I find it hard to create something that stands out just fiddling around.

Start reading blog, other's portfolio and try to understand why the design was made the way it is. You will get a lot of decision making tricks for design.

Absolutely! Learning design? Just grab a mentor, practice on your own, ask questions, and keep repeating. You'll nail it!

There are 2 aspects to this. Do you want to learn design or do you want to learn the design tool (Figma etc)?

For the tool - Watch tool specific tutorials, take paid courses as they're worth it, you just have to find what works for you.

For design - Start with UX guidelines and UX strategy. You can get it on free and premium courses too. Then use a good design system to practise and learn side-by-side. As much as you practise, you will polish your skills.

I'm launching Cxful very soon, it focuses on the whole aspect of design, not just putting together some sections and calling it the final design.

There are some great online resources to learn design fundamentals like typography, color theory, layout, etc. - check out https://designcode.io, https://hackdesign.org, or https://refactoringui.com for awesome free courses and tutorials. Copying and deconstructing designs you like is also super helpful for building those design muscles. And tools like Figma make it easy to experiment and iterate. The key is lots of practice and getting feedback from other designers to keep improving!
