  • Substack vs Medium vs self hosted Wordpress?

Anyone have a lot of experience in this territory for hosting a company blog? We have a self hosted Wordpress blog for our company where we post all sorts of different resources and case studies. But I wanted something that was a little more flexible for casual sharing and reflections, so I started a Substack. I'm trying to decide where I invest more energy and if I should move more of the company stuff to Substack as well for more distribution. I haven't had much luck with Medium. Curious about people's thoughts here.

Has to be Medium for me, while I do see why certain groups of people may not prefer it much anymore. 😅

Hey @lorenzsell! 😄 It sounds like you're exploring some great platforms for your blog. Substack is awesome for its flexibility and ease of use, and it's great for building a subscriber base. Wordpress gives you total control and customization, which is perfect for detailed case studies and resources. If Medium hasn’t worked out well for you, maybe a hybrid approach could work? Use Wordpress for the in-depth stuff and Substack for more casual sharing and reflections to widen your audience. Excited to see how this turns out for you! 🚀✨

The best place for the company blog is generally on your main website's domain - it's immensely important for SEO and organic traffic You can redirect from another domain, but it's rumoured to be less effective. You really want it to be www.companyname.com/blog If that's not an option: Platforms like Medium and Substack have a great advantage - they might share some of their authority and traffic with you as. However, it comes at the cost of now truly owning your blog and having to comply with the platforms' whims. In this regard, Wordpress is a safer option. Work with a designer to create several templates for different types of content - this should help to speed up casual sharings

@alex_skazka ya, I think I'm going for some kind of middle ground here with the SEO based stuff on our company blog and the more opinion based stuff on Substack.

Choosing between Substack, Medium, and self-hosted Wordpress? It's like picking your go-to coding language: each has its strengths, but finding that sweet spot is key. So, where's your blog's tech heart leaning today?

Tough choice as these 3 platforms have different goals. Medium has slowed down, I feel , in the recent past. I'd say go for substack

Self-hosted, hands down. Else, you will be working for them instead of for yourself.
