Raising money on Kickstarter - have you tried it?

I'm considering raising money for the development of my app on Kickstarter. Has anyone out there tried this approach and what were your results? What has worked in making it a successful campaign?

@thestarkster Thanks, I've actually started doing some pre-Kickstarter launch planning. Right now I am running a t-shirt design contest on a website. The winning t-shirt will be given away to donors who help fund our project. I'm also creating a landing page for a waiting list and a video explaining the project. Hopefully, these efforts will pay off. With Kickstarter, you either hit your goal or you don't receive any of the money.
