  • PoV: Marketing your own business is harder than marketing for others

I'm a developer turned marketer who led growth marketing for B2B SaaS companies. About 2 months ago, I turned an IndieHacker who's built product and now trying to market them. When I worked for others - I worked with a clear strategy and never doubted anything I implemented; and got great results. But now, as a marketer of my own products, I often doubt my own strategies. As a developer - I know the product I built is solid and has market demand. I'd have been happy if the same product was developed by someone else and I was given the responsibility to market it. I know what to do; and I am doing it - but there's some doubt; and frankly, I don't know why. It's like being an experienced surgeon. You might have done hundreds of successful surgeries, but when you are operating on your own son / daughter - you may not feel just as confident. Would love to know what you think.

That’s the case with me too. I think it has got to do with 2 things: 1. Marketing is not a clinical function- there are very few instances where you can say- if you do this, this will be the result. Hence, there is always this level of uncertainty. 2. When it’s not your product, the onus of it growing is not completely on you. You have others playing a a role in it too (product team). Whereas when you are soloprenuer- whatever happens- it is on you and you only. Additionally, the repercussions it has on your bottom line is a direct hit. It’s bound to make you feel unsure about yourself- but I have seen your marketing prowess and I think you are doing all the right things

I feel the same. We feel more linked to our situations and projects because it is more personal than advising other people. No worries, you are not alone. I have a MEME for you:

Ah, the classic case of the surgeon getting jittery when operating on family! Marketing your own brainchild is like debugging code you wrote at 3 AM - doubts just sneak in. Remember, even the best marketers need a pep talk from time to time, so give yourself a good ol' motivational coding session!

Promoting your own business can be more difficult than promoting someone else's. It's like trying to high-five yourself, only to end up awkwardly clapping in front of a mirror and wondering why your reflection isn't more impressed :)
