Let’s Make Featuring Great Again 🚀

Hey everyone!
I came across this discussion (https://www.producthunt.com/discussions/my-friends-spent-a-lot-of-time-preparing-for-their-launch-but-they-didn-t-get-featured) about a project that worked hard to prepare for their launch. They had amazing community support but didn’t get featured. Even though they ranked second overall, not being featured meant they missed out on badges, recognition, and, more importantly, the traffic and users they needed to grow.
In discussions with fellow makers, we’ve noticed that sometimes products that don’t seem to fully align with Product Hunt’s stated criteria (like Novelty or Usefulness) still get featured, while others that appear to meet these guidelines more closely don’t make it. This raises questions about how decisions are made and how we, as a community, can improve the process 🤔
Many teams spend weeks—or even months—preparing for their launch, only to feel like their hard work didn’t pay off. This can be especially tough for small startups where founders juggle everything, unlike big companies with dedicated teams and large budgets. For these creators, a launch is often a key source of traffic and feedback while managing tight constraints like runway and burn rate.
Here are a few ideas to get the conversation started:
1. Clear Criteria for Makers:
Product Hunt provides general guidelines https://help.producthunt.com/en/articles/9883485-product-hunt-featuring-guidelines (like Novelty and Usefulness), but the final decision lies with moderators. What if makers filled out a simple form explaining how their product meets each criterion (e.g., in 200 characters)? This could include how it’s useful, innovative, or creative, plus a check to confirm they meet the "What We Don’t Feature" guidelines.
2. Audience Interest:
If 300+ people click “Notify me” before the launch, it’s a strong signal of interest and could help qualify the product for featuring.
3. Votes-Based Promotion:
Products that get 300+ votes in the "All" section within 4 hours could automatically move to "Featured." This ensures attention-grabbing products don’t go unnoticed.
4. Fair Placement on the Homepage:
All projects could appear on the homepage at the same time in a random order. If a product gets 300 votes in the first 4 hours, it moves to "Featured." If not, it stays in "All." This way, every product gets a fair chance.
Why is this important? 🙏
Product Hunt has always been a platform that supports innovation and creativity. Featuring isn’t just about badges; it’s a crucial way for many creators to get traffic and early recognition. By improving the featuring process, we can help even more makers succeed, encourage launches, and ensure that Product Hunt continues to thrive as a space for sharing and discovering amazing new products.

There are definitely some strange things happening with the Featuring right now. It's completely opaque to the creators and contradicts the very rules that the PH team is stating.
This selective Featuring is simply negating the work the team has done for a month. This is an unfair and unpredictable risk for the team.
It would be great if the PH team heard us.

@andreylipkovskiy @andreylipkov @lipkovskiy Absolutely agree. The lack of transparency is really frustrating, especially when it contradicts the guidelines

@andreylipkovskiy @andreylipkov @lipkovskiy Thank you for the materials you sent. I am sure that this will be useful for the participants and viewers of the discussion.
Projects don’t know until the very last moment whether they’ll be featured, which leads to constant launch delays and puts unnecessary pressure on the support team. A clearer, more predictable process would benefit both makers and Product Hunt itself.

@dzmitry_ivanou Thanks for your thoughts and pushing the thread. I agree, I know teams that monitor for featured an hour before launch and reschedule if not featured.

I always find Product Hunt featuring like a casino

If anyone from the Product Hunt team happens to be reading this, I want to start by saying how much we value this platform. It’s an amazing place that gives creators a chance to showcase their work, connect with a supportive community, and gain valuable feedback. Thank you for all the hard work that makes this possible! 🙏
This discussion isn’t about complaints or criticism. It’s about sharing experiences and exploring how we, as a community, can make things better—not just for makers, but for the platform itself. We know how much effort goes into running something as dynamic as Product Hunt, and our goal is to contribute ideas that could help improve clarity and transparency in the process.
Thanks to everyone who’s been part of this conversation so far! Your insights and stories really show how much we all care about making this platform the best it can be. Let’s keep the conversation going and work together to create an even better future for Product Hunt. 🚀
I’ve also had a project that wasn’t featured and couldn’t understand why. These suggestions make a lot of sense and could help bring much-needed clarity to the process.
we definitely lack some clarity in criterias for makers
good points, Stepan
Our product did well on launch day, holding 4th in upvotes, but it never made it above the fold. Frustrating, yes, but I get why upvotes aren’t the only criterion – otherwise, launches would just be a contest of who can buy the most. Still, emotionally, it felt like a rigged race where our authentic launch without any paid upvotes never had a real chance.

@hennrunnel Thank you for sharing your opinion!
I’ve also come across offers from people promoting products for money. I believe this is unfair, as it undermines the core values of the platform, turning it into something akin to an auction. I hope that, over time, the Product Hunt community will address the issue of paid promotions and work towards ensuring more honest voting. Otherwise, smaller teams with great products but limited budgets might struggle to gain the recognition they deserve.
I also hope that our discussions will contribute to making Product Hunt a better platform. This is something I deeply believe in and am ready to support with my own efforts."

I think that no. 4 is the most triggering – but still there is that thing with bots + purchasing upvotes. This can be sometimes cheated so human touch is inevitable.
But in general, I agree, that selection should be made by community, not only moderated by the team.
Hell yeah, I faced the same issue with our low-code automation platform launch, it was so frustrating.
It should be fair for everyone, and place should be based only on the vote and quality of people who vote, but never on the hidden criterias…
Thank you for highlighting this important topic. Hope it will be changed.

100% agree and support the initiative. Need clear rules and heads-up for makers if something is wrong with their launch🙌🏼

I completely agree with the points raised—it’s a fair perspective. I’d also add that there should be transparent feedback on why a project wasn’t featured. Without it, the process feels arbitrary and discouraging. I personally tried reaching out to Product Hunt support through various channels but was consistently ignored—messages were read but left unanswered. This lack of communication only adds to the frustration and undermines trust in the platform.
