Lessons learned from finishing #2 on Product Hunt!

What it's like to launch your app on Product Hunt? My app received the badge for the 2nd product of the day, even though while launching the app I had only 30 followers on Product Hunt and about 250 people subscribed to the Kyugo app website in the last 6 months (and the conversion to PH was around 5 %). πŸ˜²πŸ’‘ Recently, I leaped and launched Kyugo, my personal guardian, as my first app. It was a huge success for me, but of course, I made some mistakes. Let me share those mistakes and lessons with you. πŸ™ŒπŸ€“ 1️⃣ Firstly, I created the Product Hunt landing page for the Kyugo app too late, just a week before the launch. This generated only 35 followers. Next time, I'd establish the product page much sooner and drive more traffic there early on. As a creator on Product Hunt, having more followers now will definitely help. πŸ“ŠπŸ“ˆ 2️⃣ My personal goal was to finish in the top 5, which happened almost immediately. I didn't expect Kyugo to be fourth once the rank was made public, leaving me a bit unprepared. I had no plans to push higher from there. Next time, I'll make a detailed posting plan in advance. πŸ—“οΈπŸ“Œ 3️⃣ We started only on AppStore, leaving many Android users unhappy despite the Kyugo app working with Google Calendar. This was due to delays in our developer's account approval by Google. Looking back, I think it was a mistake. We received many comments on Product Hunt about the missing Android version, and considering 80% of users are on Android, it's something to prioritize for the future. πŸ“±πŸ‘Ž 4️⃣ I did almost everything alone, from UX/UI to managing comments. Next time, I'd ask for help or hire someone to assist, especially with managing the discussion on our landing page. A good night's sleep is invaluable during a launch! 😴πŸ‘₯ Because I slept only for 2 hours on the launch day. The discussion under the Kyugo landing page went crazy, with over 150 comments by the end of the campaign. I tried to reply to every comment. But more about this experience in future posts! πŸ“’πŸ’¬

Great tip Tom about building a launch page early - many of us would make this mistake

Awesome post, thank you so much for sharing! I'll definitely plan for points 1 and 2 in the future; they'll apply to my next product for sure. β€’ About the app, do you have plans to support Proton Calendar in the future? β€’ What software did you use for the images in the gallery on your product page? Specifically the phone frames; I've tried a couple of apps but always end up doing it manually.

@sixbangs Good point about having a look at Proton! I'm using https://mockuuups.studio/, flawless

Congrats, and great lessons!

Congratulations! And it seems all the attention was organic? Or did you also get in touch with people on LI, X and drove traffic from there as well?
Tom Garcy
@grvsharma I had a simple landing page before launching the full site kyugo.app, where users can enter their email "to know first".
Tom Garcy
@grvsharma 80+% organic. I wrote about Kyugo on my Linkedin for some time, but since I had 250 people on a waiting list, and only around 5% converted, it's organic
Gaurav Sharma
@tom_garcy That is great! Are you talking about the PH teaser waiting list, or your own? I am new to PH and haven't launched here yet, they seem to hide the list of notify me people at least on the teaser, so do not know if you can actually check what the conversion was for people who hit notifyme/follow on your teaser? All the best!

Thanks for the info!

Sounds like a success all in all. What do you think we're the things you did right to get you to that number 2 spot?
Tom Garcy
@dzaitzow I think I brought something new, a new perspective on a standard product, with good design & UX, making you try it at least.
Daniel Zaitzow
@tom_garcy yea that checks out and are you following a PLG strategy, sales led or something in the middle? Sounds like the product was cool enough to get eyeballs without much initial promotion!
Tom Garcy
@dzaitzow yeah, it did! Even if I've been working in Marketing for years, what I lack is the execution of a proper campaign to keep the momentum. So now I hired a new team member to help me with that... but I'd appreciate any tips :)
Daniel Zaitzow
@tom_garcy Seems like the team is crushing it but if I come up with any tips I will be sure to send them over!

Wow, that's amazing, congratulations! We'll be launching mDash, our AI-powered project management platform built specifically for web development, next month. I really appreciate the lessons, as this will be my first ever PH launch! If anyone is interested in mDash or supporting our launch, we'd love it if you'd check out our coming soon page!
