Hey everyone! I'm Kyle, one of two founders of Depot. We were recently in the YC W23 batch, and we're both expats living in Europe. Jacob is in π¬π§ and I'm in π«π·.
Depot builds Docker images up to 20x faster in Continous Integration environments like GitHub Actions, Circle, etc., and for local development as well β‘
We're launching Depot here on Product Hunt on May 17th to share what we've been building before, during, and after our YC experience.
Fun fact: We started Depot in January 2022 while I was still living in Oregon. We built, launched, applied, and got accepted into YC building a product with a 9-hour time difference between us. But we're happy there is only a 1-hour difference now π
I've been on Product Hunt for a while now. This is such an incredible community of builders that are constantly iterating on new ideas.
So let's chat about anything and everything around YC, building a developer tool company, Docker containers, Kubernetes, DevOps, being expats, and beyond.
All questions are fair game here. So fire away! π

Hi, my question is why did you decide to make an AMA on PH as opposed to reddit or something?

@orliesaurus Thanks for the question. I thought it would be fun to try something different, seeing as we're launching Depot here next week.
Hi! Just wanted to say that your mobile front end design flowed nicely, especially for such high information density. I think I read every word of the copy. Looking forward to the 17th launch π β what has it been like building products while being immersed in another culture/language? Do you feel like it was additive in any way? Wondering if sheβs considered more international users from day one because of your relocationβ¦ cheers π₯
@blake_whittington Thank you for the very kind words about our landing page. Kudos to @jacobwgillespie on that one.
Moving to France after getting accepted into YC with Depot has had an impact. From a language perspective, I speak fluent French with my wife & son, but the first few weeks required adapting. So I think it gave me this attitude to be more patient with myself and the process, which has kinda naturally slotted into building Depot as well.
Additive is a great word to describe it! Being immersed in the culture of France and living in Europe has shifted things a bit for me as it relates to building a developer tool. It feels like I've been given an enhanced ability to look at new problems in similar but slightly different ways. In addition, it gives us an incredible opportunity to talk with people facing the problems we are trying to solve without being pinned to the US. Of course, that was always possible, but it feels much more accessible now.
New perspectives from different areas of the world with various industries give you a different look into the things you could build & help solve.
So we have more international users than I think we would have been able to have if we were both back on the west coast. I think, in a way, we are more "in the middle" of everyone now, which is fantastic. It can make for some late nights when you want to work/talk with folks back in PST, but we're pretty used to that now π
So... Why isn't Jacob allowed to drink redbull on call with you?
@aaron_batilo2 I'm a big Formula 1 fan, and Jacob watched Drive to Survive while he was sick one day. Afterward, he became a Red Bull team fan to spite me as a Mercedes team fan. So now, after every race, if Red Bull wins, he will make sure to have a Red Bull to drink if we are on a call together.
So I say he isn't allowed, but he does it anyway π
