How do you decide what to upvote on Product Hunt? Do you have any particular criteria?

I get many requests daily to upvote a product. If I have time I always throw the product, check the website, read throw the cta-s, and try to leave feedback too. If I see any value in the product I leave an upvote. Most of the time I used upvotes to bookmark a product that I will use later so I didn't leave many upvotes. It would be a great feature to bookmark a product or add to my favorites (@jamie_sprowl @ahiggz @rahulmfg @syswarren @devladinci @denistsuman). I could use collections for this feature but I won't be the same.

@jamie_sprowl @ahiggz @rahulmfg @syswarren @devladinci @denistsuman @david_sipos So coincidentally Liffery is launching on Product Hunt today and could actually be used super well for collecting all the products you would want to try in the future. Check out our launch and let us know what you think :)

@david_sipos hey thanks for the idea! I’m curious what collections is missing that you’re envisioning on the bookmark/favorites feature.
Dávid Sipos
@jamie_sprowl Collections for me is like a drawer cabinet and each drawer is for different clothes and it's clean and public. And favorites are like a laundry basket where I can dump all the clothes and I would keep them private. And adding to my favorites would be one click while adding to my collection is 2 click minimum. I hope you understand what I mean here with drawers :D

@jamie_sprowl @david_sipos I totally get the desire for reducing friction. We can certainly consider an update that defaults collecting to a private folder, with additional clicks to organize further. Although, in case you haven't seen it, there is a feature to set collections to private.

@product_at_producthunt Ah thank you Jamie! I haven’t think about using collections as dumping my favourites until I wrote this discussion. I’m my mind collections was something you create for a category and share with the community. But I just saw I can add to my default collection with one tap in the mobile app it’s super cool.
I actually test the product before leaving any upvotes or comments
@dominicyates For sure :) Of course, I can't test all the products out there every day but I take a look at the product industry and the solution. Then I filter out the most intriguing ones.

@dominicyates @canberk_ars Would love for you to test mine narratedtours.com (do bear in mind it's an MVP) 😅https://www.producthunt.com/prod...
@canberk_ars I've wanted to do this too! Though the lack of time makes my upvote list end up as products, I would want to test instead. Still, once I get through it, I will give feedback on my notes to the maker.
@dominicyates @byhazellim Does it also work in Montenegro Kotor? If so, I would love to take a tour :)

I upvote based on how effective, interesting or unique ideas is!
I upvote the products that make me feel like a tech-savvy wizard, but also won't break the bank. Basically, if it's magic AND affordable, it gets my vote.✨💸

This is such an insightful question for those of us launching a product soon. Thanks for asking Dávid!

I just take a look at the product. If it's from a big company or something I have used before, I first use the product and write a review.
Dávid Sipos
@gulshan_kumar10 and what if it's not from a big company?
Gulshan
@david_sipos Then I have a quick look, read the description and see mockups. If it looks promising, I upvote. But I write a review only after using it

I upvote products on Product Hunt based on their uniqueness, potential impact, and usefulness. Additionally, a compelling presentation and the team's engagement in the comments section also factor into my decision.

I usually up ore everything I comment or participate in any way, and then I also upvote things I just find interesting. But in general if I find it interesting I comment so it usually also falls in the first rule eh 😁

One of my requirements is that the app actually benefits people, as well as if the concept is original.@david_sipos
Dávid Sipos
@donahernande13 Do you check every product or just pick them for more details?
Ekrem Çetinkaya
I quickly check the product and the launch page. If they both look interesting and the idea is promising, I upvote.

This is a great discussion. I will see how it applies to my startup or experience. There are a lot of launches that I have no idea what they're building or offering either because of my own ignorance or the content is not written for a 5 year old (which is always my guiding principle for website copy). Clarity is crucial. So if I can see the value, can understand the offering, and/or can offer some kind of feedback, I upvote.

Interesting discussion. I also use upvotes to "not miss" out on products that I might want to use. I started to open that criteria a bit, and, now, I upvote more liberally based on creativity, and I use bookmarks in the browser to keep track of products that I want to try — bookmark folders are necessary!

If I like the idea and value of the product, based on the landing page, and PH presentation I give an upvote. If I find the product helful for my workflow I also test it
Rasmus Kuusisto
Uniqueness and product that solve human problems. that would be great
