Any product is the result of creativity vs practicality. Done well this is also at the heart of minimalism, doing the most with the least in harmony with material, form & function. "First, make it easy. Then make it fast. Then make it pretty." I also appreciate this quote from the Everest App post on PH's Medium

Set clear daily goals for yourself, focus only on the important tasks. Constantly remind yourself of the importance of health and focus. This can help avoid getting caught up in endless trivial matters, overextending your energy, and deviating from your goals.
Balancing creativity and practicality is key in any project. I usually start with a brainstorming session where I let my creativity flow freely, jotting down all ideas without limitations. Then, I evaluate each idea based on its feasibility and practicality in the context of the project's goals and constraints. It's crucial to find that sweet spot where imaginative ideas meet realistic implementation. It often involves iterating, refining, and sometimes compromising to ensure the project stays innovative yet achievable.

I like to clearly define the objectives of a project when we start brainstorming sessions and become creative. However, I always encourage feedback from the others to validate those ideas and the practicality of those.

Sometimes creativity and practicality can serve each other I think. Especially during the early stages of a project, you need to think about solutions with limited resources and options. But sometimes you have to take care of mundane tasks, so I think the best way to balance is to grow the ability to say no, and prioritize tasks based on urgency.

I always set up a DDL so that I don't optimize prematurely, and unless I'm working for myself, I throw away some ideas.

@hacksman What do you mean with DDL in this context?

Balancing creativity and practicality is definitely a challenge, but I find that setting clear goals and timelines helps me stay on track while still allowing room for creative exploration. I also like to involve diverse perspectives in the process to ensure that my projects are both innovative and feasible. How about you? Do you have any tips for finding that balance?

I look at how it would be more logical to use an idea and practicality, there are some ideas that are already practical, but improvisation will help well in this regard.

I usually start with the practical aspects—identifying the core goals and requirements. Once the foundation is solid, creativity naturally falls into place to enhance and refine the project.

I believe practicality is prioritized after talking with your users. Once you understand their urgent problems, that's where creativity comes in, as you build a unique solution for them.

Wow, already a lot of great suggestions in here. I'll share something regarding execution: I structure my days so I have 'productive' tasks before lunch, where I naturally have more of a GTD-mentality, and the 'creative' tasks for afternoon/evening, where my thoughts go off anyway. Seems obvious at first, but really helps a lot!

@zackary_mendez Sounds great, do you prefer brainstorming on your own or together with others? :)

@zackary_mendez agree. Brainstorming session is always my favorite step. I'm curious to know what kind of tactics that you find useful to filter those ideas.
