  • Google domains are closing!

    Hi hunters, Google domains that many of us keep domains have been sold to another company. It was the cheapest place to buy domains, simple and effective, but again, Google didn't surprise us. My question is where are you planning to move your domains to?

    You don’t need to move your domains away as such. Squarespace will be taking over existing customers of Google domains and knowing both, I’m expecting the transition to be quite seamless

    @namrata_arya They say that they will keep the prices for 12 months, but I don't think it will be like google domains.

    @mikroyazilimci ah okay. I guess that remains to be seen 👍

    Check out Cloudflare Registrar as a possible replacement! They offer no-markup pricing for domains. https://www.cloudflare.com/produ...

    So sad. By far the best domain service IMO, especially combined with Firebase. My default replacement will be Cloudflare.

    I just never understood why AWS did make a user friendly domain service they have route 53 which is great btw but the fact is AWS is less user friendly than Google cloud. So imagine the possibility’s if they made it easier to buy a domain, then do cloud storage etc. it’s just a little too complicated compared to google. But AWS rocks.

    @imran_razak "I just never understood why AWS did not make a user friendly service" Fixed that for you ha

    Another addition to https://killedbygoogle.com/ this is sad. Makes you wonder if Google will be in business 20 years from now.

    Not sure where I'll be moving all my domains to but perhaps namecheap

    @theterminalguy From what I've seen many people recommend cloudflare or namecheap. I think I'll move it to one of them.

    @theterminalguy Check out Dynadot or Porkbun, much cleaner interface IMHO and you can see at one glance what settings/nameservers/forwarding each domain has. Also Namecheap is expensive on renewals whereas Dynadot has bulk pricing from $500 yearly or pre-charge. ;)

    @mikroyazilimci I absolutely love Namecheap.

    This is sad news if it's real.
    It does sound crazy that Google will generate a business that generates $10M+ in revenue. But the fact is, this is a small amount compared to their other business units. Secondarily, there is a good chance anything that generates less than $100M for them is unprofitable by just considering how much they pay and the number of people that needs to focus on projects like these.
