Does the source make a difference?

Today most people make money on social media by getting a cut of the ad revenue the platform generates. Yes, some of them do make money directly from their audience but the majority depend on ad share. If you could make majority of your money directly from your audience like Patreon, does it make a difference, or is at all the same at the end of the day as as long as it is money?
