AI can't understand emotions. It can identify them based on certain criteria and respond accordingly, based on the algorithms it's programmed with.

Current AIs surely not. To truly understand a conscious experience like an emotion, the AI would need to know how it is like to have that experience. Which again means that it would need to be able to have that experience itself. But current AIs do not model the processes that lead to emotions in humans, at least surely not completely enough, and not in sufficient detail. So even if functionalism is true and current AIs have some form of consciousness, it still seems impossible that they truly understand human emotions.
AI uses techniques like natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to detect sentiment from text and audio. While it can parse emotional indicators like tone or key phrases, achieving a nuanced understanding requires further advances in contextual AI and affective computing but we're getting there day by day
Human emotions are diverse and complex. While AI can be trained to analyze vast amounts of data to predict emotional responses, it cannot offer true emotional understanding, as it doesn’t experience emotions itself.
While AI can analyze and recognize patterns in human emotions through data and algorithms, it lacks genuine understanding and empathy. Its ability to simulate emotional responses is based on learned behaviors rather than true emotional experience, making it a tool for support rather than a replacement for human connection.
