I am not sure if it can be called rigging the process. Yes I agree with certain startups using the share strength of their employee network to be no. 1.  
Earlier I used to notice that some known hunter can get you to top but I think ph has changed certain policy around that. 
I believe at the end a great product and pitch stands out.

It is possible that some products that are released on Product Hunt may be trying to rig the process. However, it is difficult to say for sure without concrete evidence.
