Curious about your approach in both online and offline, the key is effective rather than pep talks

Hey @kellyann3644! 🌟 Great question! In my experience, effective support is all about active listening and providing actionable advice. Online, I often share useful resources and connect people with others who have the expertise they need. Offline, I try to be present and genuinely understand the challenges before jumping in with solutions. How do you approach this? 😊

I have regular 1:1s with all my directs and sometimes skip level 1:1s. Actually we building a tool for 1:1s right now, that should help with subjects that managers often miss. But if I want to provide one real-life example. It's about the "How are you?" question. I start every 1:1 with “How are you?”. The simple question that could be considered no more than politeness. But it helps track changes in employee situations and start digging into issues. First of all, I write down an answer every 1:1. Even if it is simple “ok”. If you had “ok” for 2 months and now you hear “great”, something happening and you should know about it. If I see changes in facial expressions, tone of voice, or behavior I’m also writing it down. This way I keep track of any changes. But there is more to this question. You shouldn’t be satisfied with a simple answer. If an employee is ok, ask what he needs to feel great. If he is always great, what does he need to feel perfect? Dig a little deeper. It teaches people to engage in self-reflection. Provides you with action points for improving work life. And highlight potential problems.
