Amazon dominant online retail and other competitors have market segments. I always thought Walmart, Target or even Costco could make a better shopping experience than Amazon, but they haven't. Walmart or Target have stores nearby 80% of the US population. They have been slow in implementing any innovations.

Even if all of the above have better customer service(even though Walmart imo is not) - they lack one huge thing: E-presence as much as Amazon does and delivery system. Amazon cuts so much on delivery prices on top of having pretty low prices itself - no amount of customer service going to fix having higher prices for 95% of customers. Add on top of that that it constantly has improving listings(I know a lot of new companies like Weby Corp http://webycorp.com/ who focus heavily on improving listings) that you can 360 degree items and read thousands of reviews - and you get yourself a trustworthy and budget friendly option, that delivers within days after you order on top of being reputable and scamer free. Simple as that

I believe that new big players have less chance of competing with Amazon now, but small niche marketplaces perform pretty well. I agree with you that costco is more user-friendly even though they don't have as much variety. But lately I only order through them and it's very convenient that they have a rather responsive support service that I contacted at https://costco.pissedconsumer.com/customer-service.html where they could help me when I had a problem with one order. As a result, I contacted customer support several times and both times they quickly helped me solve my problem with the order.
