As a programmer, Will you choose to market your product yourself or outsource it?
I believe every programmer must learn a bit of marketing. You build great stuff but you must know to sell it as well..
I learned this lesson the hard way, i never considered myself a marketing guy and frankly I am very reticent about it. Launched a couple of products but I must overcome this fear and still trying.. Anyone here who became a successful marketer out of a shy programmer? Please share your journey

I'm still learning. Although I kinda learned a little bit of marketing first, then learned how to program, and am now trying to re-level up my marketing skills.
I really hate putting myself out there. I schedule 30 minutes every day to do marketing, comment on things, tweet, and generally promote my products. I really should up this to more like an hour a day.
I'm also working on some programming things that are also kinda marketing- like building a referral system and setting up newsletter subscriptions and blogs on my sites.

I suggest in other way. There should be always a product owner along with developers. He should market it. Hiring a marketer in the initial days will hurt the product. Because, only a person who knows the End to End product can sell in the early days. A developer (Not all) cannot think on a client perspective in most cases, so a product owner who can set the product roadmap is much essential.....We are a team of 3 and two others are developers. I am doing all product roadmap, vision and expectation, they implement it.
Hi Everyone! Good to see this interesting discussion. Yes, I was a successful programmer and professional game developer, recently I turned my career as a digital marketer and online gaming expert blogger. I created a website https://gamblizard.com/no-deposi... where people get lots of resources and information about the top online gaming deals and no deposit welcome bonuses offers, codes, etc. Nowadays, most people are searching for these kinds of information that's why I created this informative website for these game lovers. I love sharing my knowledge with people.
@markohenry That's good ... How do you feel now?? Any thought of going back to dev ?

how did you launch products without doing marketing?
@abewinter By marketing i am referring to prolong / continous marketing ... launch it just single day operation.

@abewinter @aarvy 'marketing' doesn't just mean ads + PR, it includes market research and picking which product to develop. If you're not finding and talking to potential customers before you launch, you're leaving money on the table.
@abewinter @aarvy I did spend around 20 days to look for potential audience, picked existing similar products and did some consumer analysis. Then i figured out how i can more features and provide more value to it. I didn't validate because the existing products already doing well and I know there is the market. Only thing I left is not telling anyone about it. but somehow i didn't counted these as marketing only but marketing research instead.... may be its just terminology mismatch. But yeah, i should talk to customers before building.

@jionni_manly Huh???
I think a lot of people understandably find it hard to market themelves or their baby. It might be helpful to enlist a friend who's enthusiastic about what you're building to do it for you. You could offer them a free weekly dinner or a trade of some kind. It's usually much easier to extoll the great qualities in others than in ourselves. You might also be surprised in the unique way they pitch your product because they aren't so close to it.

To answer your question, I always do my own marketing in-house. My experience with agencies has been terrible so far. What most of them do is churn out crappy quality of work but bill you exorbitant prices for their “services”. I’m yet to find an agency that I’d trust with any of my projects.
My initial exposure to marketing involved an awesome in-house team, so my standards were set high from the get-go. I had direct contact with a top-tier SEO team as a front end dev at http://nodepositdaily.com/. We worked closely on a few projects where I had the front row seats to content marketing, search engine optimization and the rest of techniques they were implementing to get our product out there.
Prior to working with them, I knew that marketing was important but I never knew exactly how much of a difference it was making in sales alone. Like most devs, I’ve changed a few jobs since then, going from one company to another. Every time I changed my workplace, I was looking into how that brand was doing SEO and marketing. Then, the last time I got burnt out at a job, a realization hit me that maybe it was time for me to do something else. SEO is now a major part of my work life, and I couldn’t be happier.
I think that every programmer should be a marketer) of course it is better to sell your product yourself. I know a lot of successful people who have learned the basic principles of marketing themselves and sell their developments well. If you can not find yourself and need the money - you can try your luck for example in the slot machines or roulette. The main thing is to know the measure and to use only reliable methods for withdrawal. Details on this website. Good luck finding yourself)
Since I am trying to make my stuff known to people, I am slowly realising that I really do have to learn marketing. It's not something I'm very natural at, but I will try my best.
