advice on getting open-sourcing early designs to the maker community?

we're redefining our product strategy, and we really want to start talking to people sooner than soon. as we're focusing on wearable and screen free AR and on co-building this with the community, we were thinking on open-sourcing our early product designs and encouraging people to build apps for it. has anyone done anything of the sort? how/ where should i approach the wider maker community?
