How long did it take to get your first 1000 active users ?

It took me 3 month on my first project.

We're on the way for Misakey.. Maybe today 🤞

I was wondering what was you go to 1000 experience. And what channel/strategy did you use?

@arthur_blanchon The first wave of people - your direct community buys your product because they are familiar with you and you built trust with them over time. The second wave buys because they were influenced by the first wave of people. As you move further outside your core community, trust goes down and skepticism goes up. That third wave of people at scale take a lot of more energy.

To answer you directly, it took two years to scale.

It goes without saying, it took a lot of sweat equity.

1. Community: I had built and nurtured a community before I had the idea.  
2. Partnership Plan:  I created a partnership plan that benefited both partners and their audiences. Some things were as simple as linking to each other in newsletters and social media, commenting on blog posts, LinkedIn - anywhere my audience hung out (I identified about a dozen sources), interviews (podcasts/webinars). I made a goal of at least one new partnership a day for 30 days. Just one collaboration a day significantly boosted my email list.
3. Great product: helps tremendously to have a product/service that was desirable - that was developed by listening to the community I created.

I've repeated this for several different start-ups in e-commerce, Saas, and productized services.

IME this obviously depends on the offering. B2C or other consumer devices that have no geographical limit can get you 1,000 users quite quickly. 1 to 3 months usually. B2B won't easily get you 1,000 users in a year. Some high value offerings will rarely get 1,000 users in 10 years. However, I've organised and run community campaigns where we got 1,000 folk in 3 days, hitting "trigger" words with both twitter and Facebook Ads and also distributing this through some FB groups. But that was a very specific community problem. Which tends to fit better with those platforms.

For Automedi (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/automedi) we've done a mix of digital and  real life campaigns. As it stands, because the market is mostly older SMEs, there is a heavy digital inertia we have to get over. The Ads didn't gain us that much engagement and neither did real-life traditional marketing. So we're trying different options to engage folk directly or go straight to government or larger distribution channels. Bypassing SME's altogether and trying to get their professional body recommendations. This could also be a slow burn.

We have a disadvantage in that we're starting in the UK. It's generally one of the worst markets to try to launch this sort of subscription based managed service but it is a condition of some of the funding. So we have to do it. There are not that many people who grok it off-the-bat here and crucially, the way UK procurement works, means it is extremely slow to get into public health and social care contexts, even though it desperately needs it. This can lead to disastrous situations.

As an example digression, the impact of WannaCry on the UK NHS. It knocked out 20% of hospital trusts for up to 6 weeks because so many ran such old, insecure Windows version they couldn't get upgraded because they couldn't find time for a tender exercise [unnecessary at the time]. Meaning it fell to NHS Digital and their antiquated policy facilitated it. As the necessary MS service pack wasn't installed. After such situations, it leaves prospects fearful. Even if it has nothing to do with you and "risk aversion" suddenly also becomes a pre-condition of your context as a result. Slowing your acquisition rate.
