Hey, you UX people. How often do you get to do any research?

I never get to do research beyond content audits and heuristics. It's my experience working as a consultant, since profit margins are narrow and there's no access to users. But now, when I interview at various places that aren't consultancies, they want to see my "research," and I have little to show. How about you?
