Best books for founders that aren't "business" books
What are the best books you've read that help you in your work, but aren't necessarily 'business' books?
I'm reading Imperium by Robert Harris, a historical novel about the life of Ancient Roman statesman, Cicero, and it's an incredible insight into communication, strategy and creativity.
What would you recommend?

Hey Sahil, do you think the billion-dollar-or-bust pressure comes from the businesses that people choose to work on that makes them need huge scale to succeed? Or rather a belief in the founders that that's what all successful startups looks like?

Hosting a free event for techies to meet more founders
Hey all - hosting a free discussion event at 4:30pm BST today with Rija Javed, engineering leader at Facebook!! Part of a meetup group for people in tech to meet, learn and become friends :)
I started it to meet more people on a similar path to me, much like Product Hunt but where we can talk face to face (or screen to...

Who is your entrepreneurial icon?
I recently discovered Brunello Cucinelli, fashion designer and entrepreneur, founder of his namesake fashion house. Erudite, aesthetic, authentic, unique.... he embodies his brand and built these characteristics into his business culture. Headquartered in an Italian hamlet that he has spent lots of his wealth developing, and where people are banned from working passed 5:30pm.
In a world where...

Do you have a process for working through days when you don't feel great?
We all have days when we aren't feeling 100%. Tiredness, slightly ill, stress, our dog dying, randomly anxious etc etc.
What are your mental and habitual approaches to managing these days? Power through as much as possible? Actively rest?

Never lost belief in the quality/potential of my idea, but some days I feel demotivated. Am I alone?
Often my motivation and excitement from what I'm doing are strong. But sometimes, my inherent motivation seems to be amiss. I then get worried about this happening and my anxiety goes up - damaging my productivity further! Should I be around? Or should I accept that this is just part of the journey, the ups and downs of starting something on your own?

Very specific to our product (collate.org), but we are running student writing competitions, which allows us to:
- Attract high profile relevant twitter users to judge the comp (they love helping students win prizes) - who will then share our profile/follow us and hopefully do so again in the future.
- Leverage the students who enter to share their content/and us on their own socials. i.e....

Is it just me, or are founders more inclined to metaphysical thinking?
I tend to be a bit more introspective and philosophical than my friends who aren't founders/hackers. Maybe this is a common thing in founders? What's your experience?
- Why are things like this? (the universe, or a problem a business could solve!)
- What's our purpose? (life itself, or our company's mission!)
- "The journey is the reward" feels somewhat metaphysical to me. Where are we going?...

It's also great as a first version of a product because of it's speed and cost-effectiveness compared to full-stack bespoke development, so even if you have to throw it away, still makes sense as a tool for getting a product in front of users ASAP. Opening up tech entrepreneurship to more people :)
We're using Bubble for our app at collate.org and it's coming together nicely. Can't wait to...

Nice thread. Good luck all! I'm building a platform for leaders to engage in-depth with the public, away from the chaos of social media, and give us more access to learn from/scrutinise them... no hiding behind soundbites. Our landing page is at https://collate.org
Let's share your progress! We'll build, get feedback & grow together 😄

Is there point optimizing SEO right at the start of your startup? Considering less content etc.
With so little content and such a low ranking, what's the point of optimising SEO until you're at a certain level of content, backlinks etc? Or am I missing something?

Are healthy online discussion forums a result of good product design or the people they attract?
Evidence that people express more outrage on Twitter because of what is rewarded (design decision), but other smaller communities like PH bring together like-minded people and it seems to be healthier. What is more important?

Feel a constant pressure on myself/anxiety to work more hours, but know that I need downtime to be most productive and slowly learning to go easier on myself. Psychology of entrepreneurship is wild....
How many hours do you work on your startup every day?
