Does this work without an internet connection? This would have been perfect when I was lost in the middle of Costa Rica and only knew 10 words of Spanish 😔

@chadwhitaker offline function would make this app even more valuable than it is

Anyone remembers 🐠 Babelfish from the Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy? They built it.

Are there any benefits to this over Google Translate?
George Gayl
@jordankrueger I have a similar question. I know Google Translate doesn't work in China. Does iTranslate Converse?
Alexander Marktl
Hi, I’m Alex, the CEO of iTranslate (www.itranslate.com) - the global #1 in conversational translation apps. With iTranslate Converse our goal is to make a voice translation App that works in any environment, even when there’s background noise or when you speak fast. By holding your iPhone upside down you dramatically improve results as well as create a more natural conversation experience. It literally turns your iPhone into the first real translation device. Feel free to reach out if there are any questions - we’re happy to answer them!
Bo Wang
@alexmarktl I am guessing the translation is based on Google/Microsoft Cloud Translation API?

@alexmarktl When we can expect Android version? early beta access available?
McCleish Haynes
@alexmarktl Does it work without internet access for countries in which internet is not quite reliable?
Guillaume Flandre
Very nice, I should really try that on a next trip!
Alexander Marktl
@gflandre Hi Guillaume, you definitely should! :)

Saw this featured on App Store last week, looked amazing and I downloaded immediately...but balked at the $4.99 monthly subscription. I won't use it enough. I'd have used it last week in Mexico, but I won't use it again until October, and don't want to be paying all year for it. Product looks amazing though.
Andreas Mahringer
This is very cool! Why the whole upside down thing though? :)
Alexander Marktl
@mahringer_a Bringing the microphone and speaker directly into the conversation improves the voice recognition results and the natural flow of conversation. The better mic input therefore allows the App to works in any environment, even when there's background noise or when you speak fast.

@alexmarktl true, but the UI is so hard to figure out. Where to click, where to hold, to many moving parts. It's need to be simpler
Jason Peck
THIS IS AMAAAAAAAAZING!!!!!!!! I can't wait for it to support even more languages (Kannada please!) :)

Super cool! I have to admit, when I clicked through I was expecting g a shoe, this is more interesting

Awesome app, but like so many of these apps, it really needs an offline mode to be viable for a lot of people.
Ivanisawesome

Converse is amazing; I can't wait to use it the next time I travel abroad and don't speak the language. I don't believe the app features an "offline" mode so data roaming costs could hurt your wallet.

Pros:

Translation works quickly and accurately every time I've tested it with several languages.

Cons:

Absolutely minor; flipping ones phone around can sometimes feel awkward.

Very cool @alexmarktl! Makes life so much easier when traveling!
Alexander Marktl
@pmansata Hi Promeet, thanks for the feedback. That's the key purpose of this app - making you life easier by breaking language barriers.

It's funny to use for dating :)
Alexander Marktl
@iamcrumplecat Hi, that's an interesting use case. Let us know how well it worked! :)

Awesome product! Is there any chance Converse (shoe company) can say the name infringes on their brand?
Carl
@jeremy_sh I doubt it, trademark registration (and even just claiming you own trademark rights) are directly linked to the products and/or services you provide.... so, unless the shoe company has a product/service related to translation, then these guys should be safe. Same goes for most trademarks, especially if nobody opposes during the registration process. Also, even if the shoe company registered their brand for a translation device but they are not actively using the brand for that purpose then these guys end up having more right over the brand... at least that's my understanding, I might be wrong 😂
Jeremy Sh
@cprins_ Thanks for the info. What is converse just has an app to sell their shoes. Wouldnt it fall under "tech", not translation but still in the realm of internet company.
Carl
@jeremy_sh Really doubt it would be an issue, but always best to confirm those details with IP lawyer(s) before investing too much in a specific trademark
Daniel Spajic
This is awesome, I'd definitely get it if it was on Android
Alexander Marktl
@mightyspaj Hi Daniel, the Android version is planned for Fall 2017.
Mak Mo
It is cool but the Pilot app is much convenient with ear plugs so you don`t have to hold your phone. Good luck
Alexander Marktl
@youssif_maxzoom Hi Youssif, actually, we recently introduced the world's first available ear translator, through a collaboration with Bragi's The Dash Pro. Check it out - https://www.itranslate.com/ear-t...
Mak Mo
@alexmarktl do you have live interpreters also?
Joon Kee Park
Hey @alexmarktl congrats on the launch and cool product! I've seen similar voice translation apps before, most notably one integrated into the Hostelworld app. How does Converse differ?
Alexander Marktl
@joon_kee_park Hi, We use state of the Art Machine Translation technology as everyone else does. However, the iTranslate Converse App creates a huge improvement over all current solutions by these 2 innovations: 1. By using the phone upside down you get much better Mic inputs. 2. The Tap & Hold gesture gives you full control over start & stop, which means way less unintended inputs. In real life situations, especially when dealing with noisy background environments, these 2 innovations are a major step forward for speech translationApps.
Chintamani Chintadripettai
@alexmarktl who is your 'state of the Art Machine Translation technology' provider?
Doc Daniel
I tried translating my conversations with a Trump supporter, but it failed. Any plans for idiomatic translation between contentious ideologies?
Rasmus Brushoj
Nice app, especially when you go on (business) trips and want to communicate with the locals. Maybe also handy for our international employees @halfassbackwards @ghezallie when you travel around Copenhagen ;)

I can't start my free trial... It suggests me to press the Touch ID and pay $9.99 for two months. When I press cancel I have an error message.. Can't use it now. IPhone 6S IOS 10.3.3 version 10.6.1
Alexander Marktl
@matman Hi Matthew, you have to submit your Touch ID if you want to start a free trial. You may un-subscribe afterwards, during your 7 day trial period and will not be charged anything. The subscription process is managed by Apple, here are the guidelines: https://support.apple.com/en-us/...
