@mikeshinoda ! this song & video are πŸ”₯!! Can only imagine how cool it is on VR. What's next for you? Are we getting an album? Please πŸ˜ƒ
Mike Shinoda
@mscccc No album at this moment--putting out the song as a standalone felt right, as opposed to making a whole album and waiting to put everything out (which is the usual chain of events). I feel like this is a more modern approach: when I've got something to share--a song, video, or whatever--I share it! Make sure to follow me on your favorite social media to be in the loop. https://www.facebook.com/mikeshi... https://twitter.com/mikeshinoda https://instagram.com/m_shinoda/ Snapchat: MikeShinodaLive

@mikeshinoda @mscccc I'd love to hear thoughts from your experience pushing turntablism more into the mainstream (your own work with LinkinPark, collabs w/ JayZ, X-Ecutioners). How was that experience from your perspective? And how do you think of those efforts in the context of music that came before and after?
Erik Torenberg
@staringispolite i just saw this....Jonathan you are a MASTER at text rapping. i need to get you ghostwriting.
Nick Schwab
Welcome to Product Hunt, @mikeshinoda! What are your thoughts on doing a "Fort Minor Underground" project with unproduced/raw tracks, similar to that of Linkin Park's?
Mike Shinoda
@nickschwab With so many social platforms and so much noise, I'd (theoretically) like to keep things simpler. Probably best place to do it is through the existing Linkin Park Underground, or just release them on fortminor.com ...haven't really thought about it :)
Nick Schwab
What tech was used to film the 360 "Welcome" video? Did you get your hands on a Google Jump? (https://www.google.com/get/cardb...)
Mike Shinoda
@nickschwab We filmed on a 4-Go-Pro cluster.
Erik Torenberg
Will we see any more collaborations with rappers in the future? Which rappers would you love to collaborate with? People are begging for an "encore" The one question i forgot to ask ;)
Bhavesh Patel ✌️
@mikeshinoda should team up with @eriktorenberg for a single!
Jonathan Howard
@bhavesh @eriktorenberg @mikeshinoda @rrhoover @jsneedles Yes! Erik on a track would be amazing :) Who you heard fresher than 'berg? Riddle me that PH event-goers, where he lyrically at? Young P-H, tech's Grateful Dead, About to take over the world, now break bread. E's in... podcasts, coach class Off to Israel but the Slack channels still connect "On the low, here's a launch, can you triple-check?" But with community what the fuck you expect? (yep! yep!) Grand opening, /games growing, God damn it, T-Berg cracked the can open again. Who you know who's out-husslin' him? No music section, Just start off AMA'in!
Erik Torenberg
Super excited to launch our first single on Product Hunt. There isn't a more appropriate artist to launch with than Mike Shinoda of Fort Minor (and Linkin Park), who's been in the tech game for quite a bit. Stay tuned for a podcast episode with him. UPDATE: Mike will be giving an AMA at 10 AM PST! Ask some questions in advance :)
Todd Saunders
@mikeshinoda Pretty awesome to hear about you guys opening up Machine Shop. Curious about your investment strategy.
Mike Shinoda
@toddsaunders @eriktorenberg The fund is a way for us to deepen our relationship with the tech community, to learn, and to support smart people and innovative ideas. To get more granular, we're interested in consumer-facing tech that is on-brand with Linkin Park. We've already invested in Robinhood, Shyp, Lyft, and Blue Bottle Coffee.

@mikeshinoda If you think you'd dig a browser extension that turns your post field in Facebook, Twitter and lots of sites into a multimedia content-crafter (gif, emoji, images, influencer-tagging, etc.), please kick the tires on https://ritetag.com and ping me (I'm osakasaul everywhere.) The song and video and wonderful, BTW; I'm sure you're going to be beckoned to play Japan again.
Erik Torenberg
What's been your philosophy on signing or managing artists? is it still of interest? what are the key qualities of artists do you look for -- what in their work or personality?
Mike Shinoda
@eriktorenberg Not managing or signing artists anymore. Figured it's better to just focus our attention on the varied interests of our own band and its members!
Enric Enrich
Hey, and welcome to Product Hunt, @mikeshinoda! I've been following you and Linkin Park for years now! So happy to see new material coming from Fort Minor! Why did you choose to do a 360 video for the song? Also, do you have in mind to continue writing more songs as Fort Minor? :)
Eric Willis
Hey Mike, What do you think about Periscope (and live streaming in general)? Do you see yourself using the platform to debut music or do AMAs with your fans?
Eric Willis
@julien_jorda @erictwillis Yeah. I didn't ask about Meerkat because I don't think he's used it, but I'm really interested to get his take on the topic.
julien jorda
@erictwillis I don't think either. In my case it is more because we have a livestreaming app of our own, and music artists like him are our number 1 focus users.
Mike Shinoda
@erictwillis I'm on Periscope. Love it. Haven't debuted new music on Periscope yet; not sure if I'd prefer that to Snapchat at this point, but we'll see!

A video release on product hunt.

@mikeshinoda As someone that has a deep interest in VR, AR, and more, this is a really interesting project to me. Congrats on the launch. What platforms is this designed for, and how can I access it without iTunes or an Apple product (is it available for Android and Google Cardboard, for example)?
Mike Shinoda
@therealsjr Right now, Youtube supports 360 videos like this one 1.) inside the mobile YouTube app, and 2.) in the Chrome browser. If you have an android phone and cardboard, you can open it in the app and press the cardboard icon to view in 360 VR. **BTW, for those of you who are less familiar with 360/VR if you're watching the video and it looks "stretched" or looks kinda like two bubbles on left and right, then 360 is not enabled. Switch to the app or Chrome.
Brent Summers
Hey @mikeshinoda, What's your take on Apple Music?
Mike Shinoda
@brentsum The three standout elements, to me: 1.) $15 family plan for up to 6 people, 2.) Apple Music Connect, and 3.) Beats One live worldwide *with amazing DJs and curated playlists* Both Apple and Spotify need to make it easier to edit playlists on mobile. It's too cumbersome (read: impossible) to move and delete groups of tracks. If they want you to "live" in that app, it needs to be as easy or better than the desktop version. As for "freemium / Ad supported not paying enough" (Spotify, Pandora), I think that ought to be more directed at the users than the company. Users of free streaming are almost in the same boat as people who pirate songs--I feel like it's a behavior that just "is"...either because they haven't been taught to respect the creators by paying for the art, or because the user simply can't afford to buy what they want to listen to. Either way, I'd prefer that person use freemium streaming over illegally downloading.
Brent Summers
@mikeshinoda great points, thanks! agree there is a huge opp. for the first player who makes mobile playlists easy to build.
Eric Metelka
@mikeshinoda Your thoughts on this are really interesting to hear and much appreciated (Hybrid Theory was my anthem to high school). But I don't agree with the opinion that it's the user's fault. If free streaming is bad, then the company shouldn't offer it. You can't blame consumers for taking an option (the default option) that is put before them. It's like the design of anything. If a user is doing something the product designer didn't intend, it's the product's fault.

Hi @mikeshonida - love what you guys are doing here - this has my vote! @eriktorenberg I'm an investor in http://www.jauntvr.com - a leading Cinematic VR company based in SF & LA who have raised $30m+ to date. Would love to introduce you both! Also I'm continually looking at other content&media Startups to invest in, and would love to connect to discuss further. I work for Europe's largest content and PayTV media company (Sky), and am leading investments in exciting Startups. You can find out more here too: http://startups.sky.com/who-we-w.... Look forward to hearing from you! Hope this post is ok, given this was more of a discussion board. All the best, James

Apologies @mikeshinoda, I made a small typo when writing my message above - whilst on my iPhone. Best, James

Hey @mikeshinoda, great video, glad you came back. I've saw 15 longboards in this video, never saw you ride one. Is it possible to shoot 360 video while driving one of those? I'm not sure how big this camera is, but it seemed like a good idea for some next video.
julien jorda
@mikeshinoda, dope clip in venice! Are you guys planning on using these kind of 360 degrees camera on stage/ live?
Mike Shinoda
@julien_jorda No plans yet. What I liked about the WELCOME video is the opportunity to do something more narrative, as opposed to plopping a 360 cam on the side of a stage...but I'm not opposed to a 360 or VR live shoot.
julien jorda
Btw, I was at your talk at Collision in Vegas, really inspirational, especially resonated with us at @holyventcompany! Totally share the same vision of what the video in the music industry should be, and how it has to serve artists :)
Mike Shinoda
@julien_jorda Thanks! Big changes are happening now, content is seeping into a bunch of new territories and platforms (for example, the massively popular messaging app Line is now selling music. Not to mention the obvious Apple / Spotify topic). I also believe there might be an opportunity for the tech community to go to bat WITH the artists in a way that the labels and networks never could. Only time will tell.
julien jorda
@mikeshinoda @julien_jorda Totally agree on that. I feel that too many artists get frustrated/suspicious about technology in general and are afraid of ticket cannibalization/ misuse of their music/image, due to abusive and monopolistic behavior of labels, platforms etc... I also think time has come to break this paradigm.
Lejla Bajgoric
Hey @mikeshinoda :) I caught the Forbes "From Piracy to Prosperity" article you were recently featured in. You mentioned the importance of not only having a presence on all distribution platforms [both freemium (Spotify) and paid (Apple/Beats)] but also making sure to innovate within them, to provide the ultimate fan experience. Can you elaborate/give examples on the ways you innovate? And why those specific ways?
Mike Shinoda
@lejlahunts Innovation on those platforms can be very overt; for example, an artist might have a conversation directly with the company about a release. Think about Beyonce's choice to make videos for every song and release everything as a surprise, all at once. Our efforts up until now have mostly been more subtle, like being one of the first artists to support platforms' new services, like the in-store merch and concert ticket sales buttons in Spotify. And I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do with Apple Connect and Beats One. I'm proud of the super-compact marketing roll-out of Welcome, which involved a complex orchestration of all our social media and the 360 video, driving traffic to YouTube, iTunes, and Spotify.
Neolani Caruso
@mikeshinoda you did a good and great job one this song also I listen to it like almost every time guest but you did a good job and My 1st question is when you started working on a new fort minor song. When did you know you had to make a new song on the fort minor album and My 2nd question is How did you come up the song Welcome?
