I created Notify for Spotify after switching from Apple Music and being surprised that it didn't show a notification when songs switched. I tried a couple other apps but found them to be buggy (Spotify doesn't immediately provide song metadata when playing from search, so other apps would show no notifications, or empty metadata) and didn't let you control playback from the menubar.
