It's not really a mistake as such, but I think people should fail at least once at something big that they care deeply about. It humbles you and changes the way you think of yourself and what you do. I don't think there is a shortcut to this learning. Going through it seems to be the only way.

If I was to start again I'd bootstrap. I think being nimble at the beginning by having limited financial resources will really make your startup prioritise those things that matter instead of focusing on vanity metrics or launching a "perfect" product.

Do a lot of more customer interviews and analyse them better to find actual pain points
