As a retired crazy world traveler. I can add few cents here:
My personal X-factor in exploring the world, was finding less traveled/turisric spots.
In other words, I loved experiencing the uniqueness of a place without the toxicity of tourist.
And there are lots of those gems in remote places (NZ, Vietnam, Southern Africa, ex-Soviet union, etc)
