The next update(1.3.1) of the app is waiting for the PlayStore approval and adds the promised backup-functionality. Now before optimizing your images, you will be given the option to make a backup upfront.

DATE - ExifTool for WA is a simple tool to reorganzie your images after you restored a backup from WhatsApp and your images are not organzied properly. This happens because WhatsApp removes any Exif-Data when sending or recieving images.
