👋 Hello Product Hunters! I'm Tomer Lerner, creator of Wikiwand Wikiwand was founded over a decade ago (crazy!) by @liorgrossman and Ilan Lewin. I joined as the first employee to design and help with client-side development. Initially, we focused on enhancing Wikipedia's UX, which, at the time, lagged behind most web products. It was a huge success, with most users arriving via our Chrome extension. The challenge was to find effective ways to monetize and continue improving the product. We eventually went our separate ways, but the much-loved product was kept alive by our investors who refused to shut it down. Over the years, SEO improved, and the extension gained more and more users. I always had this thought in the back of my mind that Wikiwand had the potential to go even further, enhancing Wikipedia’s miracle beyond what we had initially achieved. Not long ago, I discussed some ideas with Saar Wilf, our angel investor, and we decided to give it a go. With the rise of AI, we saw an opportunity to create a unique, knowledge-focused platform that addresses many of the issues found in AI chats and knowledge bots, especially hallucinations and shallow, context-lacking answers. We started from scratch with this mission in mind: to build the perfect feature set that complements—rather than replaces—each Wikipedia article, making learning faster without sacrificing depth. Here are the 4 key features we defined: ⭐🕒 Timelines: Important events from each article are placed in chronological order. This is tremendously helpful for skimming through a story quickly, understanding the relationships between events, and finding connections that might be missed in a lengthy text. ⭐🤔 Top Questions: Chatbots are amazing and continually improving, but when you're new to a topic, you often don’t know what to ask. We address this by surfacing all the top questions directly from each article's body, uncovering many fascinating facts often buried in the article. ⭐💬 Chat: Sometimes, you just need to quickly find specific information within an article. Our chat feature differs by prioritizing answers from the article you’re reading, virtually eliminating hallucinations. Each response includes summaries, links, and references to related articles, giving a fuller picture and encouraging deeper understanding rather than just surface-level "knowing." ⭐🔍 Search: Wikipedia is language-specific, with each language version developed separately, and its search is title-based. AI enables us to detect query language and locate the most relevant articles. Wikiwand's search feels completely natural, with autocomplete suggestions for articles, dictionary definitions, and quotes pages. You can also ask questions directly, and Wikiwand will provide an answer while presenting the most relevant articles for further exploration. We’re super excited to release this on Product Hunt and can’t wait to hear the community's thoughts and feedback! 💌✨ Questions? Ideas? We're all ears! Contact us

Huge congrats to the Wikiwand team on today's launch! I just played around with Wikiwand and loving how it tidies up Wikipedia - the added timelines and top questions are genius! Quick question: Are there plans to integrate Wikiwand with other online knowledge bases (e.g. Wiktionary, Wikiquote) for an even broader research experience?
Tomer Lerner
@ihuzaifashoukat thanks for that :) Wiktionary and Wikiquote are already there! ...maybe it needs to be more obvious ;) Just under the search bar there are tabs, we call them "buckets", "All" for free search (including Wiktionary and Quotes snippets), article, dictionary, quotes etc. Wikiwand search each query or Wikipedia title you browse in Wiktionary and Wikiquote as well
Tomer Lerner
@ihuzaifashoukat the AI responses are primarily relying on Wikipedia articles though. We are experimenting with adding all Wikis to the context. It's a challenging task since the content on other Wikis is not on par in depth and quality as the content in Wikipedia, especially on the larger languages, so making sure this will add more value is tricky. What makes Wikiwand's AI unique, is focus. Once our focus is on the article users read, or we detect the most suitable articles an answer for a question is probable - there is way better chance of accuracy and depth + we wrap all references in summary hovercards so users get the context, not just the "dry" answer. Hope that helps giving a better view of our goals and constraints :) Appreciate your comment!

your UI is great and it's so performant. Very pleasant experience to use. I'm going to have to try it more in practice to see if I can get value out of the AI features but its very promising 🔥
