Big update! I've been a fan of Whimsical for simple flow charting and wireframing in the browser. This expansion makes a lot of sense.

Hey folks! As a remote team from the early days, we've relied on collaboration tools to get things done. One aspect that we were never happy with was document editors. Existing tools did not appear optimized for the kind of jobs to be done we had – for example iterating on product pitches. So we built our own editor that does 3 things really well: 1. Enriching text with flowcharts, wireframes and other visual content (and then jumping between the two without much hassle) 2. Speed of writing and editing experience 3. Real-time and async collaboration On top of that we sprinkled some of the Whimsical magic, such as the time machine and focus mode. Please give it a spin and let us know what you think!

@k7d Love your work guys, big fan of Whimsical. It's looking like developing the potential to replace Notion at this rate!
Ioana Rebeca
@k7d I'm rooting for you guys to replace Confluence & Jira & Zeplin in my product marketing & business operations.

@k7d Thanks, Whimsical Docs looks great! But what I do really miss is the opposite: I would like to have an infinite canvas where I have mind-maps, cards, links, etc and where I can attach some internal/external documents to these items so I can "dive deeper" into some topics from the canvas and back. Because for now, it seems to me I should move my notes to Whimsical Docs from Notion/Bear/etc. At the moment linking inside Whimsical is working not so well: not every elements can have links, there are problems with putting some external links, etc. It's just my case, but I hope you get the point.
Kaspars Dancis
@sauron918 hear you! it's on our radar and something we want to improve sooner than later
Steve Schoeffel
@iglitia Thanks Ioana!

I've been a Whimsical user for a while as it's the quickest way to produce a good looking diagram. I typically use it for flowcharts, data models, or team structure diagrams. Coincidentally, we just cancelled our Dropbox account because we never used the storage but we did love Dropbox Paper. This seems like it'll be a suitable replacement for collaborative documents AND diagrams. Top tip: you can write in Markdown and if you copy the text and paste into a text editor, you'll get the markdown version. If you paste into a rich text editor, you'll get the rich text version. This wasn't immediately obvious but I'm very grateful that it Just Works™
Steve Schoeffel
@ideasasylum Yes! 🙌🏼 Glad you noticed that about the markdown. That was the handiwork of @nate_hunzaker. Additional tip: you can right-click to get options like Copy as Plain Text.

This is awesome! I find myself having to do some context switching still, using Notion as a main platform but still having to go to Miro for stuff like mindmapping, etc. Will check it out for sure.
Steve Schoeffel
@daryllman Yes, we know what you mean. We experienced the same thing. Our team has really enjoyed having it all in one place! Excited for you to try it out 😀
Daryll Wong
@steveschoeffel For sure! All the best man! Excited to see more innovations in the docs/note/collaboration space -- still in its infancy!

Once upon a time there was sliced bread but that went stale. Then came Whimsical and harmony was restored to the world. Hyperbolic review? Yeah, just a wee bit :) But Whimsical is awesome. Use it every day.

@k7d Whimsical has been a life saver for my business and me. It helps me structure and organize my thoughts and ideas clearly and quickly. Played around with the docs update and it's going to be my go to for binding all whimicals together. Here's to more power to your team and you. 💪 🎉
Steve Schoeffel
@iprashantpillai 🙌🏼 Awesome to hear this Prashant! Exactly like you said – Docs has bound everything together for our team as well. Hope it does the same for you.
James Quinn
How does this compare to something like Miro?
Steve Schoeffel
@james_afino Hey James, it's a fair question because there is a lot of overlap in the use cases covered by Miro and by boards within Whimsical (Whimsical Flowcharts, Wireframes, Mind Maps, etc.). However, with Docs, Whimsical can now support a ton of totally new use cases that can't be done in Miro. For example: product specs, team wikis, meeting notes, client dashboards, etc. To get a feel for these, you can see live examples here (which is a Whimsical Doc itself): https://whimsical.com/docs-use-c... There is a lot of power in being able to nest boards (and other Docs) directly inside of a Doc.

As a PM, Whimsical is my favourite product BY FAR. I can't say enough about how seamlessly all their products work together and how good their attention to detail is. As someone building in the Document editing space with gSweets I'm so fkn pumped to have Whimsical raising the bar for what a Document editor should be. Focus mode + Typewriter mode look magical and I can't wait to try it out. Kudos to the whole team @k7d !
Steve Schoeffel
@jeremykovac Thanks for the kind words Jeremy! It means a lot (truly). We decided to build our text editor from scratch so that we could control and refine every detail. It's always a work-in-progress but we're excited about where we can take it from here. Also, gSweets looks very cool!

Never expected a day that I would be able to write Docs on Whimsical. Really grateful for this 👏👏 What I found atm is that Shift+Enter doesn't work. Maybe you guys can fix this later, other than that it's amazing. Love the simplicity ❤️
Mel Larsen
@adytra Hey there! When you're using Shift + Enter, are you trying to submit a comment? Or are you using that keyboard shortcut combo to try and do something else (like a soft return?)? Drop us a line at help@whimsical.com and we're happy to dig in & help :)
Anurag Singh
@adytra this comment is so awesome to see - amazing how no one does this. It was the first thing we implemented on our Boards feature :)
Anurag Singh
Pretty cool take on docs @kaspars @steveschoeffel . I like how each element can be nested into a doc. Wireframing is really cool too. I would say overall beats Notion in terms of structure. ✌️ Disclosure: We're building in this space.
Jevon
I love Whimsical mind maps. They've picked a great balance between simplicity and usefulness. Looking forward to using this!
Antonio Calabrese
Just started using this. 5 mins in and I'm already sold on using this to replace Google docs, Trello, and more. Great work! I'll definitely be recommending Whimsical.
Ann McMeekin Carrier
I'm a huge whimsical fan and have been for years, and this latest feature is more of the same - delightfully useful, usable, and well thought-out. Being able to place diagrams and wireframes within a document, rather than having multiple files scattered and linked from elsewhere is just brilliant. Absolutely loving it.
Steve Schoeffel
@pixeldiva You're the best – thank you Ann!!
Robert Cantoni
Whimsical's flowcharts and wireframing are already an essential tool for quickly sketching out product ideas. Adding docs to the mix is going to help me communicate those ideas to clients. It just makes sense as the next step. I'm excited for this.
Nitin Ahuja
Love ❤️ what you have built and these new features will continue to make it easier to share ideas and collaborate. Nice work.
Jean Chung
I have started using this product to create flowcharts for my business. It's quite easy to use compared to Windows products that I used to use in the old days. Make my life so much easier.
Steve Schoeffel
@jean_chung 🙌🏼 Thanks for the kind words Jean!
Francoo
Congrats with this !! What about the new pricing scheme ?
Steve Schoeffel
@francoolaami Thank you! It's better aligned with the overall product experience now. It should give you lots more room to explore and get a feel for things!
Dina
Big fan of Whimsical and use it a lot for product work. Excited for this new release! Thank you for keeping UX in mind and not overcomplicating the tool. Your power is in the simplicity ✨
Blythe Renay
I found Whimsical recently, and it REALLY helped me to organize out a lot of thoughts when I was pretty overwhelmed and unsure how to structure them! The work you're doing is awesome.
Steve Schoeffel
@blytherenay Amazing to hear that – thanks for the kind words Blythe! 😊
Morten Brudvik
Really great, as a regular Evernote user I felt right at home at once. :) I would like some way to select all the text on the page and copy it. Using Cmd+a on my mac only selected part of the text. Keep up the great work!
Steve Schoeffel
@morten_brudvik Good to here Morten! Hitting Cmd+a twice should do the trick 😉
