Whatis is the easiest way to manage your team's internal terminology, jargon, project names, and acronyms. Increase your team’s efficiency, decentralize knowledge management, and make onboarding easier for new employees - without leaving Slack!
We’ve been using Whatis at Minerva for a few weeks now. Before Whatis, I would write out an acronym fully to introduce it (such a pain when you consider how wide your audience can be). But now, I’m succinct by default and it saves so much time. Keep up the great work!
@sebcoetzee Hey Sebastian, thanks for the support - we're really trying to help make it fun and easy to manage all your teams knowledge with the gamification, so great you think that's interesting!
@sebcoetzee Great to hear from you Sebastian! It was a lot of fun coming up with the user 'XP' and levels system :D As users level up they gain 'flairs' they can add to their teammates Whatises!
Hey everyone! Thanks so much for dropping by. Building Whatis has been such an awesome and rewarding experience. We're excited to continue meeting teams of all sizes.
How have you currently been managing knowledge, jargon, and terminology on your team?
I was an early user of whatif, and can definitely say... It’s awesome! It can be a huge pain to manage taxonomies and termonologies across the entire organization. Linking out to a Notion doc isn’t always ideal either. This solves those problems simply and awesomely!
What an ingenious idea! I need my company to implement this as soon as they have a vesion for Microsoft Teams 🤔 the Whatis team got the pain points of this problem a 100% correctly and were able to produce smth functional and time/face saving 🤭 once I have that, I will never need to ask my boss to decipher any acronyms for me from each call or to spend tons of time on our intranet site 🙄
Hugo here, i'm thrilled with how far Whatis has come! 🚀 From its humble beginnings as a free hobby project I launched on the Slack app directory to a product used daily by thousands of users in hundreds of teams!
It's an amazing feeling to be able to help people in this new age of remote working and onboarding, and I can't wait to see how how far Whatis can grow 🌱
I'm currently the Whatis product owner in a governmental department and I can tell you that this product has made our lives so much easier! Onboarders who used to be swamped by acronyms and terms on slack can now easily understand technical conversations and go straight to the relevant documentation and crucially for us (in such a large department) - the right contacts and channels! As a valued customer, the development team have been very responsive to our feedback and ideas, which has been an incredible experience. Highly recommend Whatis to any slack-using companies!
@chris_james_campbell Hey Chris, thanks for coming out and supporting us! It's been amazing working with you, and we are looking forward to continue working with you in the future. We love hearing all the feedback your team gives, so keep it coming.
Hi Product Hunt! We’re super excited to share Whatis with you all today.
Whatis is the easiest way for teams using Slack to organize, manage, and curate their internal terminology, jargon, project info, and acronyms.
Throw away that terrible spreadsheet, out-of-date wiki or endless email thread and install Whatis at https://whatis.rocks.
We all know the familiar feeling of thinking that you’re the only person not knowing what a certain term or acronym means, but being too shy to ask a senior manager or interrupt the flow of a meeting (Whatis doesn’t judge your searches… yet 🤖 ). Or feeling like an information kiosk - constantly bombarded with repetitive questions from colleagues.
Whatis is your team’s personal Google Search.
We’re also thrilled to announce some new features today that we have been working hard on over the past few months:
🧙♀️ Gamify Knowledge Management by earning points for creating Whatises, or when your teammates 'like' one of your entries. Encourage, track, and reward collaborative participation across your team.
🤓 Understand your team's usage, view your leaderboard, and identify gaps in your team's documented knowledge with the Whatis admin dashboard.
🔍 Our search has improved - Whatis uses natural language processing to let you search your team's terms and phrases, even if you aren’t sure how something is spelled or only know contextual details. Whatis will even find terms that are pronounced similarly to what you're searching for e.g. searching for "Ayefty" will still return "AFT"!
Whatis is brought to you with ❤️ to share our collective knowledge 🧠
by Mitchell, Hugo, and Aaron.

@eugenehp Hey Eugene, thanks! We love the community aspect of slack - Whatis does not need to be only for companies, really any community can benefit from Whatis.
We are offering Whatis premium for free for community teams, so if anyone has a community they think could benefit, please get in touch with us, we'd love to hear about your community.
We are definitely exploring other platforms, and discord is one of them. No promises on an ETA, but it's on the roadmap!
I would definitely love to test it. I'm just starting in my professional life and I often find myself so clueless when hearing acronyms or some technical vocabulary used by my colleagues, so it would surely be useful to me. I saw in the comments that you are willing to explore other platforms such as Discord, let me tell you you have one more supporter!
@jimi_desmet Hi Jimi, thanks for chiming in with your support for the idea - and great to know about the huge interest from the Discord community.
Do you use Discord at your workplace, or is it more community chat?
I recently installed Whatis at my workplace and have found it really great for managing industry terminology (hundreds of shipping terms/acronyms) and helping new joiners get up to speed. Thanks for building a simple and effective product!
@alicia_m13 I'm so happy you're finding Whatis useful Alicia!! Make sure you check out our import tool if you want to migrate in all your team's existing terms :)
@jim_thomas77 Amazing, thanks Jim! Let us know any questions or feedback you might have - we'd love to hear how you find the new team onboarding experience.
We have been working hard on some features to help new teams learn how to use the bot with an interactive onboarding flow.
At Divvy we love whatis! This has automated how we share internal knowledge and connect helpful instructions, links and documents. It makes it simple for anyone within our organization to quickly find or request information without having to talk, slack or email anyone. We have only been with Whatis for a few months and we can not build fast enough. This tool has been a game changer for not just the people team but every department within Divvy.
Hi @jennie_hertzler ! Thank you so much for your continued support. It's been such a pleasure working with you and the Divvy team. We can't wait to see what we can build together!
@jennie_hertzler Thanks for the kind words and support Jennie! It's been great working with you and we look forward to seeing how you continue to use Whatis :)
