Want to sell more bikes? Show a demo of this cruising up Filbert Street in San Francisco 😅

@chadwhitaker Or riding up the world's steepest street, conveniently located in @ow's homeland: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Bald... 📐🚲

@chadwhitaker Yeah I live at the top of 28th and the only thing that I've found that'll do it under $5k is a https://lunacycle.com/bafang-bbs...

@chadwhitaker just found/hunted an electric bike that mashes hills in SF, you might be into it: https://www.producthunt.com/post...

When you think about the internet of things, do you ever think about your bike?? VanMoof is an innovative Dutch (what else) bike brand and this is their prime product! My buddy @ow is their Digital Director, take it away!
Owen Williams
@bramk Thanks Bram 💪

CHEATER! J/k, this electric bike looks fun. Hoping to give it a try when I'm in Amsterdam for the TNW conference. 🙏🏼
Owen Williams
@rrhoover 💕 I still have some surprises for you!
Kunal Bhatia
Slick @ow! I love the ground up approach and the placement of the controls/screen underneath the handle bars. What was one aspect of the digital design that you were able to completely change or rethink that people would not expect from a smart bike?
Fred Rivett
I've yet to try an electric bike, so I haven't got to that "aha!" moment for these, but in terms of beauty, simplicity and functionality, the Van Moof team seem to be nailing it. I'd definitely like to give one of these a go, and can see them as super useful for longer commutes. My personal hope is that many cities become more bicycle focussed and less car focussed. London for example, I'd love to see it transformed into a bikers paradise. There's progress being made, but hopefully with innovations like this it'll help chip away at the idea that we should be driving around cities.
Owen Williams
@fredrivett Heck yeah! If you're ever in New York, swing by our store and we'll get you set up for a test ride.
Ernst
I really really like this bike! The thing I'm afraid of is that I need to park it at Amsterdam CS every day, other people tend to be not so nice for their neighbours when grabbing/placing their own bikes. And is it resistant against always being outside, the older models tended to get a bit too rusty after a while?
Owen Williams
@ernstmul Totally with you on that - we are pretty rough on bikes here in Amsterdam. The Electrified has a much more resilient paint job, and a lot of incremental improvements to the frame we've been making over the years, so it's much hardier than ever before :)
Dereck Breuning
Didnt this bike exist already for a while now? Love their bikes though. Thinking of buying maybe the Smartbike but not sure yet (because of price).
Owen Williams
@dereckbreuning yes, a few months, but we're finally out of the pre-order phase so you can get one right away! We preferred to wait to post, so that people didn't have to wait ages to get one :).

Hi from Amsterdam! 👋 We're excited to be on Product Hunt today and share our futuristic bike with you. The bike is fully integrated from end-to-end, as we design the majority of our parts ourselves – which means that nobody except you knows you're riding an electric bike. 🚴 It's full of smart technology, including GSM tracking, which we can use to hunt the bike down if it gets stolen –we've had great success with this, and even managed to bust a bike-thief ring here in Europe: https://medium.com/vanmoof/yeste... The Electrified (and the non-motored SmartBike) have a companion app too, which verifies it's you as you approach the bike, so you can unlock your lock with the touch of a finger on the dashboard. There's a lot of other cool features, like a parking pin so you never forget where you left your bike too – and we've got some exciting ideas in the pipeline. My favorite thing is the secret boost button on the handlebars that throws you up to full speed for taking off from intersections faster! I was an electric bike skeptic for a long time, but riding this thing in New York was the 'aha' moment for me - biking from Brooklyn to Manhattan daily for two weeks was actually do-able and fun, even on hot days. The bike finally came out of pre-order phase recently, so you can order one and get it within a week. The Verge did a review of the Electrified, calling it the "Tesla of bikes" in case you're wondering what it's like to ride: http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/2... Without nerding out too much, the team designed the Electrified S to be the ultimate city bike, to get you from A-to-B without any hassle – and to reduce cars on the road at the same time. Every decision we make is super focused on this, and we don't add bells and whistles we know you wouldn't need. Anyway, cool to share this here, and our team is happy to answer any questions you might have! I've learnt a scary amount about bikes in the last year. :)
Rick
Congrats with this beautiful, awesome product! 👏 I hope many people in cities will say goodbye to their scooters.
Owen Williams
@rygu thanks a ton, Rick!

I have a black Electrified S for 6 months after selling my car and it's my only "vehicle". Design is great, engine and electrical part also works good until now. It turns heads when I'm commuting. The price is fair considering what is offered. Just changed 2 things: pedals (plastic ones provided are not really good and bell. I would expect more updates to the app namely the ability to record milage/kilometres driven. Keep up the good work!
Owen Williams
@leite_joaopedro thanks for your feedback, João! We're working really hard on the app and have some nice stuff coming up. It's still a new product and we're getting moving pretty quickly – trust me, we want to get updates out as fast as we can. Touch Unlock and parking location just shipped, and more to come soon. :)
João Pedro Leite
@ow Hi Owen. Touch Unlock I'm already using. But parking location did not see anywhere. Coming on the next update?
Owen Williams
@leite_joaopedro Ah yes - parking location is coming to iOS soon, we just launched it on Android.

Love the innovations - especially the bike theft feature which is rampant in the US metro areas. As for the ad copy, "Create an electric bike that looks, and feels, nothing like your typical electric bike" I don't think most folks have much experience with electric bikes. I would challenge you to go further. Play up the Dutch name VanMoof and make the frame cool like a huge V - invest in some crazy paint powder coating systems with multiple colors and let designers create a signature set of Vs that you can CNC powder coat onto the frame. Folks love custom color choices and it would let you visually stand out. V for Volt, V for VanMoof, V for very (and then teach us a svelte Dutch word that starts with V). You might also add some safety features for exploding batteries. Try a test and make sure it vents to a part of the bike not next to a body part! I'd also ditch the black tires and spokes to go for something that scream electric - like colored LED lighting and reflective rubber so cars can see you.
Ouriel Ohayon
Does it work only by pedaling? or can you move by pressing a button?
Owen Williams
@ourielohayon That's right, it's pedal assist. If you could do it by holding a button it's classified as a vehicle instead.
orliesaurus
How much do the bikes weigh? I need to climb stairs with it
Owen Williams
@orliesaurus 18KG - I was carrying it up and down stairs in New York daily :)
orliesaurus
@csaba_kissi @ow that's very good for an electric bike - definitely going to keep an eye out for y'all
Robert Bye
Top Product
The only question I have left is this vs a Boosted Board!?
Owen Williams
@robjbye I feel like we need to organize a race
Robert Bye
Top Product
@ow Probably would be better than Top Gear! (also you should 100% do this, so long as it's avoiding cobbled streets!!!)
Hong Quan
@ow @robjbye Can we get in on this EV race?

Booster button fails all the time! I saved the best for last, If you're lucky enough to deal with Rico in Brooklyn he will say the most unprofessional things to avoid any sort of reality. "No bikes get stolen in Amsterdam" DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE! I really wanted to support this product but had nothing but major issues and push back when I pointed out the obvious and call them on their BS

Pros:

NIL! HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE . BEWARE!

Cons:

Motor Died! Glitchy Computer! GPS in the bike is a joke! They will never find your bike and will replace with a bike that doesn't work...

DroneHappy
A product that could have been good but unfortunately they still can't get it right after 3rd gen...?! If you like never ending BS and repairs on questionable parts then this bike is for you.

The VanMoof Electrified S2 & X2 bikes have a range of 60km (full power mode) – 150km (economy mode). Of course, you can always ride the old fashioned way (motor off) if you run out of battery power. Source https://bikeportions.com/best-fi...
Brian Nyeko
Owen do you make these for tall people(195cm+)?
Owen Williams
@briannyeko yes! It fits up to 210cm :)
