Following Facebook's announced launch into dating earlier this month. This is brilliant and adds another dimension to Tinder.

ITT: Dudes claiming how "brilliant" of an idea this is. Not in this thread: Any women who also think this is a really good idea. Hyperlocal moves in dating applications will never work unless it is done is a way that is not ripe for creepy dudes to exploit. Until I see a convincing positive review from a female as to why this isn't creepy, I will remain unconvinced that this is a good idea.

@johnzach02 that white dude is your doppelganger lmaooo

This is a great idea. I remember there was a stand-alone app that claimed this as its main feature but I don’t remember the name. Brian- do you see opportunties to drive revenue by reversing this a bit and suggesting meeting places that are sponsored? I.e: tinder suggests Starbucks as a place you’ve both been and is located conveniently for both people? I know Starbucks would pay for this :)

@adrian_salamunovic Yup, we did this several years back, and in fact were pretty confident someone slipped our investor deck to Tinder back in the day. Ours was a much better execution of the concept though IMHO https://www.producthunt.com/post...

I created Pulsate which was to connect people via Bluetooth in the same nightclubs and bars. It didn't take off because it required infrastructure. So many brand revenues streams here... Thinks drinks companies, likes of Starbucks, and the ability to bring the venue. Im working on a new product that doesnt need the infrastructure but will have same functionality so it will be interesting to see how many people opt in to the Places API

And this would be tame compared to the Chinese market: Tantan is like Tinder, but "…also shows you every time that you and another user crossed paths in the real world" https://icons8.com/articles/insa...

This is a brilliant move and a direct take on Facebook yet to launch dating feature.

This is just creepy. The last thing women need is more stalkers. No thanks.

I feel youre not gonna have enough people “opt in” for this to work. So many other dating apps have tried this.

@jaybaybay_18 Exactly. And the way they have established this is privacy hostile if you opt in. It becomes on you to delete or hide social places from your history. Say I go to a coffee shop on a regular basis that I like to work at (and be left alone at). Obviously, Tinder would infer a coffee shop as a "social" location - it is not a bank, not a house, not a doctor's office etc. To be fair, it may be a perfect spot to have a first date at - for other people. That's the problem here - people use places for different purposes, at different times, when they are in different moods. So if I go to said coffee shop that works out great as a date spot for others, and it is more of a work spot for me, I have to actively go and hide that location. Yuck. That doesn't even take into account times I could change my mind or be in a social mood at that same location.

@hayden_evans I run a business from the library so same situation. My buddy and I @donny_harding went to collision conf a few years ago in Vegas and met some people trying to do an app like that. Their biggest struggle was people (mainly girls) not wanting dudes to know where they are at all the time. I feel the same problem will occur here. Could be wrong though who knows.

@hayden_evans @jaybaybay_18 I get both sides of this. I'd love to go somewhere like a festival or the beach and know which girls were single. But the privacy aspect of this is kinda sketchy.

@hayden_evans @jaybaybay_18 @donny_harding That's why the check-in in Magnet is not automatic but you have to manually do it every time. I had amazing feedback from women about this concept.
