Hey Product Hunt! 👋 Three years ago, I didn't know anything about web development, but I wanted to create a map for an upcoming trip I was taking across the country on Amtrak. The idea was simple: map out every station, railroad bridge, and railroad crossing from Emeryville, CA to Chicago, IL. While it took a while, I finally finished the original map in December of 2019, looking forward to the trip next summer. Then, COVID-19 happened. I was forced to delay the trip until the summer of 2021, and in the meantime, decided to rework the original map with publicly available crossing data. While searching for a platform that could handle over 200,000 individual markers, I stumbled across Mapbox and built my first ever website: therailmap.com. Now, it's 2022, and I've been doing real web development for over a year. I figured it was time to refresh The Rail Map, and decided to learn React along the way. So, with the help of Mapbox, Amtrak.js, Tailwindcss, and of course Next.js, I'm happy to say that learning more about US railroads has never been easier (or looked so good!) Final note: this project is open source! Please feel free to stop by and critique my code :) https://github.com/eiiot/railmap Enjoy! - Eliot
