Wow. I wasn’t expecting the depth or the gravity of today’s show. Tyler Bates is a very busy, very centered guy, and makes his living doing EXACTLY what he has always loved – making music.
He is one of the most sought-after film and television composers, having previously delivered the scores of such hits as 300, Watchmen, Halloween I and II, John Wick, Californication, and currently working with director James Gunn on his second score of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. But why stop there? Video games need scores, too… of which he counts Killzone: Shadow Fall and God of War: Ascension among his victories.
“…and while I had felt like my career had died many times, I couldn’t ignore a more powerful urge to persevere in music.”

Tyler is also producing, co-writing, and rocking the new album with Marilyn Manson (who was there until 4am prior to this interview) after their very successful collaboration last year on Manson’s hit album, The Pale Emperor, which Rolling Stone claimed was “his best, most twisted alt-rock party in years”.
He is also a dedicated husband, and father to two beautiful girls. Which begs the question, “Where does he find the time?!”
Tyler and I discuss the mindset and determination behind doing what you love, how to maintain that very delicate work/life balance, and how saying “No” for the right reasons can allow you more clarity and drive, and saying “Yes” for the right reasons (money isn’t one of them) can open doors of opportunity.
