Jeff Keane – artist, humorist and the “man attached to the hand” that draws The Family Circus cartoon, which is carried in over 1400 newspapers and is the most widely syndicated comic panel in America.
Jeff – or Jeffy, as you may know him in the comics – started as a contributor to the newspaper strip at the age of two, when his father, legendary cartoonist Bil Keane, created the Family Circus and began observing and sharing Jeffy’s exploits as well as those of his mom, siblings and pets.
Now, some 56 years later, Jeff gets inspiration from his own kids as he continues his father’s legacy. Jeff started out just answering mail and compiling books but, through years of his father’s guidance, has taken over the feature and is responsible for all aspects of creating the daily cartoon (writing, penciling, inking, coloring).
In 2007 Keane was elected President of the National Cartoonists Society. The NCS (founded in 1946) is recognized as the world’s premier organization of professional cartoonists. He was re-elected in 2009 (becoming only the fourth two-term president in the NCS’s history). Along with a group of his NCS colleagues, Keane has done numerous trips with the USO visiting our troops in hospitals and military bases throughout the world (including both Iraq and Afghanistan).
In this episode, we find out what it’s like to be a newspaper cartoonist in these modern, digital times, and discover Jeff Keane’s very special profit abilities.
