The Mixcast is quite possibly the longest-running monthly playlist in the world. Subscribe to the free newsletter and get a hand-curated playlist filled with 80 minutes of certified fresh music delivered to your inbox twice a month.
Happy New Music Friday, everyone!
I'm Pete, the Chief Curator of TheMixcast.com. I’ve been creating monthly playlists to share with my friends since the early 2000s.
At last count, I’ve published 209 playlists. When put together, that adds up to over 4,000 songs. For those who want to try to listen to them all, be prepared, it's going to take over 15,000 minutes to do so!
While making all these playlists, I've also tried to evolve with the times. The Mixcast started out as mix CDs I would mail to college friends, followed by a stint as an MP3-powered podcast long before those got hip, and then as public Spotify playlists the last several years.
However, I've noticed recently that my playlists are no longer surfaced via Spotify search as they're pushing listeners almost exclusively to their own algorithmic curations. So I took this as a sign to try a new publishing medium again, namely, a bi-monthly newsletter powered by Ghost on my own domain.
For those of you who love discovering new music, I really hope you'll give me a few months to help you find your next favorite song via the free version of my newsletter!
Here's a little bit more insight into what kind of music you can expect to show up in your inbox twice a month --
The Mixcast Monthly
---------------------
This is an eclectic playlist that showcases a different genre every month. Each mix features 80 minutes of my favorite new music from the previous 12 months in that genre. It's the monthly playlist I've been curating on my own since 2005.
Mixcasts are sent out on the 14th of every month. If interested, you can see the genre release schedule on themixcast.com's music submission page.
The Trackcast Monthly
-----------------------
I started making this playlist in 2020 to highlight my favorite new indie releases from the previous month. While I still think Spotify's New Music Friday & Release Radar playlists are great, I don't find them easy to listen to while I work as the genres vary so widely from song-to-song. If you agree, I think you'll enjoy this hand-curated playlist instead.
Trackcasts are shared with newsletter subscribers around the end of every month, but it depends a bit on where the last New Music Friday of the month falls.
Note: Both of these playlists are still publicly available on Spotify & Apple Music and will be refreshed anytime a new newsletter is sent out. Links to both playlists can be found by clicking the Visit Button on the top of this page. And finally, my goal with The Mixcast has been always pretty simple -- help everyone who listens to my playlists find a "next favorite song" every month. Thank you to everyone who gives me a chance to do keep doing that!
Cheers, @productpete
PS - While The Mixcast has remained a passion project for nearly 20 years, I'd love to find a way to take it to the next level at some point. So if you're interested in helping me expand The Mixcast into a full-fledged music curation business, I'd love to connect with you.
