I have the same question as @lukekndy. How are these startups being chosen? Is this data-driven? More importantly, who's writing the notes about these startups? Apparently Instacart has a "5/5" rating for product? I love Instacart but this means nothing without disclosure and context.
I've run the list through Clearbit (https://clearbit.com) - which gives some interesting data like a more accurate headcount:

---- update
The mysterious person behind Breakout List (I promise it's not me) asked me to paste this in a comment:
"wanted to say thanks to alex - the clearbit data is awesome, looks like a very useful tool
the employee counts will be updated
if you’re curious about where the companies come from/what data, collected data from some investors who got in early on companies you’ve definitely heard of (+the standard crunchbase combing)
also @mattermark/nick/danielle, definitely reach out! would be great to collab
and lastly, if you’re a PH maker and want help getting in touch with a co on the list, feel free to email ph@breakoutlist.com"
@maccaw hi there. tried to email the general address from the site but haven't gotten a reply. mind telling the maker/founder to ping me? kia at venturebeat dot com -- or reply to my email :)
It's an idea I've been toying with but I, too, would be curious to know what metrics are being used here. Also, from a design aesthetics POV, the site's overuse of legends and tags is hurting my eyes.
Ignoring the data quality aspect for a moment (same questions as above)...
... not a single Austin, TX company on the list... wah, wah, wah. Would be nice to add sorting - geographically, by segment, etc.
@JeremyZ123 that's exactly approach at Craft.co . filter by Sector, e.g. Digital health, EdTech, FinTech etc., also by Geo, Size, Stage, Team profile, available jobs etc. etc. sign up for beta and we'll send welcome in Jan! will make sure Austin TX is well represented :)
Oh, this has some promise for a new approach to job boards. More whitespace in the data table, muted-colored tag pills and something like .container { max-width: 1200; } in your custom css would make this a little easier to consume.
FYI THIS NOT MY PRODUCT!
It was inspired by Nomad List though, and the person who made this asked me to submit it.
The maker would like to stay anonymous (for some reason unclear to me), please shout a lot so he gives up that weird idea and joins us in the comments :)
@imkialikethecar spills the beans. Chris Barber (@chrisbarber) in her VentureBeat coverage.
"But as with everything else around here, young engineers (and others) should probably not base their major career decisions on someone else’s list." YUP!
Yep, I thought it'd fit well with MatterMark. Maybe he can use MatterMark's data to support it?
I suggested making it a more ranked list, e.g. the fastest growing on top but he told me he didn't have data for that yet. That would make this very interesting for monitoring startups and joining them as an employee too.
This a really interesting idea, and I appreciate that's it's early stage, but it would be great to see some international startups included for those who live outside of the U.S.!
Great idea!! Craft.co has similar approach - 10k companies profiled so far (US+Int'l, Hot startups, bigger companies), piping data from Crunchbase, Twitter, AngelList, LinkedIn, GoogFin, etc. + companies' own Jobs/About Us page. happy to chat! ilya at craft dot co if interested :)
