We could likely create this list based on concrete data/signals with Mattermark. I think it would be relatively simple.
I've run the list through Clearbit (https://clearbit.com) - which gives some interesting data like a more accurate headcount:

How do companies get those little "Working at X" pages? Would love to help get one up for Medium ;)
@_tessr Craft.co is launching in Jan. We have a basic profile for Medium, but i'd love to chat about adding custom data if you'd be interested...
It's an idea I've been toying with but I, too, would be curious to know what metrics are being used here. Also, from a design aesthetics POV, the site's overuse of legends and tags is hurting my eyes.
Ignoring the data quality aspect for a moment (same questions as above)...
... not a single Austin, TX company on the list... wah, wah, wah. Would be nice to add sorting - geographically, by segment, etc.
@JeremyZ123 that's exactly approach at Craft.co . filter by Sector, e.g. Digital health, EdTech, FinTech etc., also by Geo, Size, Stage, Team profile, available jobs etc. etc. sign up for beta and we'll send welcome in Jan! will make sure Austin TX is well represented :)
It's a great idea, and something that could be really useful across the world *if* there was transparency into how this was put together.
Based on this list, the fastest growing startups are ONLY based in the US :)

Oh, this has some promise for a new approach to job boards. More whitespace in the data table, muted-colored tag pills and something like .container { max-width: 1200; } in your custom css would make this a little easier to consume.

Yep, I thought it'd fit well with MatterMark. Maybe he can use MatterMark's data to support it?
I suggested making it a more ranked list, e.g. the fastest growing on top but he told me he didn't have data for that yet. That would make this very interesting for monitoring startups and joining them as an employee too.
I don't get how this list was created. What are the data sources? What classifies these as breakout?
This a really interesting idea, and I appreciate that's it's early stage, but it would be great to see some international startups included for those who live outside of the U.S.!
Great idea!! Craft.co has similar approach - 10k companies profiled so far (US+Int'l, Hot startups, bigger companies), piping data from Crunchbase, Twitter, AngelList, LinkedIn, GoogFin, etc. + companies' own Jobs/About Us page. happy to chat! ilya at craft dot co if interested :)
