Taste helps people find the best local places to eat and drink. Locals get one favorite in each category; one coffee shop, one burger joint, etc. Check-In to receive milestones in each category to increase the value of your opinion and keep track of where you've been. Reshape the way you go eat and drink, through a positive exchange: favorites.

Tried the app, feels simple and cool !! would try it more if it has more data! For myself I like the simplicity because the review site I'm using now is bloated of info, I'd like to see more objective opinions and delicious photos. Community thing isn't very attractive to me, though. A small question, since review websites have the data, what if they create s similar cool app with the all resources they own?

Cool idea — but why only support US cities?
Andy Seavers
@juanbuis Launching as many cities as we can. Will expand outside of the US this fall. Sign up as an out-of-towner and vote for your city, no matter what country.

So, my understanding is that this is urbanspoon but instead of positive/negative review percentage, you're basing a restaurant's score on how many people have favourited this place + number of times they have checked in there with the app. I like the idea of being able to add to a score every time you go back, but I'm not sure about no negative reviews. I get that restaurant owners probably like this feature, but I actually like seeing what people complain about because it gives me context. I feel like restaurant owners should like negative feedback, too - if your restaurant has 300 reviews saying your food is lousy and your wait staff are rude, that's much better feedback than "Nobody is favouriting our restaurant".
Andy Seavers
@rossdcurrie Absolutely, great feedback. Our initial mindset was that if we add reviews, we might as well just be another review website. We can't be all things to all people. If you want to know where not to go, go to a site with negative reviews. If you want to know the best places come to Taste. I will keep your post in consideration as we move forward.

@andyseavers "If you want to know where not to go, go to a site with negative reviews. If you want to know the best places come to Taste." That's a really interesting way of looking at it. I shall have to reflect on this :) On a different note, do you guys track things like opening hours? Presumably a restaurant that is only open 2 days a week, or even just for dinner is going to be disadvantaged in the ranking system against a restaurant open 24/7?
Andy Seavers
@rossdcurrie Please do. Email me at andy@wehavetaste.com with any additional feedback you may have in the future. We pull data from weekly hours of operation. In what way do you feel companies with limited hours are at a disadvantage?

@rossdcurrie That's our idea :D I thought of the exact app to develop not too long ago. Glad someone made it.
Ross Currie
@andyseavers If score is weighted on the number of times a favouriter visits the venue, then a restaurant that's open 24/7 is going to receive way more visits than a restaurant open just for dinner... would that not automatically skew 24/7 diners to the top of your ranking?

I really like the concept and feels like this gives a real difference from any other reviews including Google Maps. However, Im sadden to see that it's only in the US just yet. I'm looking forward to give it a shot in Paris and Europe.
Andy Seavers
@mickwho1 - We hope to be in Paris this fall. Request your city at https://www.wehavetaste.com/city.... Cheers!

I saw "Patent Pending" at the bottom of your website. What is the patent?

Two big critiques so far... I had to choose the closest city (which was still 140 miles away) to setup and vote for my favorites in my City just because it was the only available option in the state. Also, what are you using to source the locations? Two of my all-time favorites in my city for drinks are not even available on the app and I can't figure out how to add them. They are high-end cocktail bars that only really locals know about, hence the point of the app.
Andy Seavers
@brody_berson Thanks for the feedback. Sourcing from Yelp currently. Let me know what the locations are and I'll get them added.
Brody Berson
@andyseavers here are two examples, but many more local places in Grand Rapids are not showing up: https://www.yelp.com/biz/sidebar... https://www.yelp.com/biz/buffalo...
Andy Seavers
@brody_berson Oh, I understand now, you are trying to set your Detroit favorites as Grand Rapids locations. Because Taste is about local favorites, the locations should be within 30-50 miles of the city. If they aren't, they don't typically show up in search. For you to set those as local favorites, we would need to add Grand Rapids as a home city. If enough friends sign up through this form, we'll get it added to the list: https://www.wehavetaste.com/city.... So many places have amazing food scenes.
Brody Berson
@andyseavers Interesting.. well then if that's the case, why can I favorite a bunch of other local favorites such as Founders Brewing Company, HopCat, Stella's Lounge (all located within Grand Rapids and are further away from Detroit than the two I mentioned)
Andy Seavers
@brody_berson Excellent question. 😂 I'll do some digging. Thanks for letting me know.

Search doesn't work in "search for locations and friends"

Love everything about this product and team! I have known these guys for awhile and think this is such an amazing solution finding the best local spots! Something I always wish I had!

Is there a reason why the Android app hasn't launched yet? I feel like when you get to the big cities there is actually a very healthy mix of Android and iOS users.

This is a great idea executed by a fantastic team! I used to travel a lot for work and always wished I had access to a list of the places locals actually liked to eat and hang out at. Yelp is ok, but it's usually overloaded with all the places tourists go when they visit on the weekends. I wish this would have been around back then, can't wait to use it now though!

This is interesting and a nice change of pace from all the review websites which are based on a star/numbers rating system. I like how you can discover new places to eat by looking at your friends lists. That way you can discover food from people whose opinion you trust. However, I feel like the favoriting system based on categories is something that will get messy and unwieldy quickly. There are many strategies that people use to choose a place to eat - pricing, cuisine and proximity are three that come to mind at the moment. Pricing alone can add up to three more categories and proximity can add an unknown number of categories if you do it based on neighborhoods. Having to favorite things across many categories doesn't seem too attractive to me especially when some of my choices can overlap. Maybe a favoriting system based on tags would be more effective? Great job though, it looks awesome!
