This social network is a combination of Twitter and Reddit. It takes the best of both worlds where you can both follow the people you love, and have great, in-depth conversations with them and others. A clean, simple interface that facilitates conversation.

Hey everyone. I created this social network out of a personal want. I use and enjoy both Twitter and Reddit, but each of them is lacking what the other has. Twitter is great for following notable people (and sometimes interacting with them!), but the UI doesn't facilitate conversation very well. Reddit is great for conversations, but not good for following people. There needed to be something in between the two, which I personally waited for someone else to create. To this day, no one has. So I decided to just create it myself. Introducing Squabbles! You can follow the people you find interesting, and you can have in-depth conversations as well. You can "tweet", and your followers can see your posts. You can join conversations with multiple people, in a format that facilitates it, and you can browse communities on subjects you love. I believe this can be a huge success, but I need your help! What do you need to do? Just use it! The biggest problem with social networks is the cold start problem. We need users to get more users! We've already gained 20k+ users, and gaining more everyday. Let's create something amazing together.

@jayclees "There needed to be something in between the two" To me, Squabbles is on its way to becoming my something between the *three*: Reddit, Twitter and Facebook. Thank you for building our new home!
Bohdan Hernandez Navia
@jayclees I'm a software developer. How can I access your API, if any?
Marc Lafleur
@jayclees Dude I gotta ask! How did you get your first 20k users? Are you finding their early adopting power users that you can build a community around?
Khim Nyang Tan
@marclafleur I think he managed to capture the right timing, when there was a large feeling of miscontent with Reddit, and a bunch of people were motivated to look for alternatives for the first time. Which is ironic given that Reddit exploded in popularity 12 years ago because of a similar situation with Digg. I guess the bottom line is that timing is key!
Antoni Kozelski
@jayclees Congratulations Squabbles!!! 👍This platform fills the gap between Twitter and Reddit in my opinion. With a user-friendly interface, the ability to follow interesting people, participate in conversations and browse communities. I wish Squabbles a thriving social network. 💎
Heleana Grace
My favorite social media apps to browse are Twitter and Reddit so this sounds perfect for me. I'm excited to try it out! Congrats on the launch! 🚀
Jake Lee
@heleana It's meant to be a hybrid of the two, so hopefully it can satisfy your needs for both!
Orysia Khimiak
Wow I loved the concept as I’m a Twitter fan, but since the owner changed and have weird politics on hiding info on war in Ukraine - I spend less time there. I will definitely try your social media! Will it also have words limit for posts?)
Lionel Sondy
@orysia_khimiak "Will it also have words limit for posts?" If you mean the maximum length of posts, that's 10,000 characters.
Jake Lee
@orysia_khimiak We are the perfect platform for this!
Caleb Hansen
@orysia_khimiak The limit on posts is 10,000 characters

💡 Bright idea
Love it! I already engaged in some fun conversations, but do have some feedback for y'all in this screen recording
Tom Medema
@linalinalina which browser are you using? I haven't seen that before. Bubbles can be opened in Chrome / Edge / Safari / Firefox / Arc on MacOS and Windows
Jake Lee
@tom4 Checked it out. Yea that's really good feedback! I'll add some default/recommended communities to the search dialogue!
TrooMobile
Great traction so who am I to say…. But the name and icon makes “arguments” come to mind … last thing I’m looking for in a social platform is more arguing 🤷‍♂️ maybe it’s just me
Logan Allan
@johnhaden True the name implies that. But I've been on Squabbles since it had about 100-200 users and I think I've seen 1 maybe 2 argumentative people (and it's just hit 23000 users). The community being created there is one of the most welcoming you'll come across at the moment.
Shaelen
@johnhaden The thing about a squabble is it's by definition "a petty quarrel". The connotation being that it's small stakes discourse. When I realized that, I think it's a clever move to help keep the emotional temperature down. So far the community has pretty resoundingly rejected rabble-rousers, and are being conscientious about making room for disparate opinions made in good faith, so long as they don't cross the line into hate speech.
Jake Lee
@johnhaden The name is a tongue-in-cheek reference to arguing yes, but it's meant to be a light-hearted dig at it, rather than an encouragement of it.
Lionel Sondy
@johnhaden Not every argument has to escalate into a fight.

The community being fostered at Squabbles has been amazing to watch unfold! There's a strong foundation of simply being welcoming and kind, which has been noticeably absent at Reddit and Twitter lately. This effect is achieved by design by taking the positive aspects of both platforms: 1. You pick your communities without ending up in an echo chamber. 2. You say your piece without fear of the downvote. We're iterating off this foundation at a rapid pace, so jump in, post your thoughts and watch the site evolve!
Frank R.
@_dylan unfortunately some people are looking for that echo chamber that they are use to, and Squabbles can become that for them if that's what they want.
Dylan Husted
@fng That's a great point. I think a big challenge (but doable) will be to evolve the liking algorithm to something more nuanced than Reddit and Twitter. Perhaps a private tagging/flagging system. Something where people don't have fear of saying their opinion, but their exposure doesn't become limited to just that. And hopefully practices like astroturfing could be kept in check from the platform becoming a political device. This is just my personal view - nothing Squabbles is officially doing yet to my knowledge!
joey
Probably one of the best times to try and put a competitor to Reddit out there. Good luck! Only thing I might add is I think the site could use a lot more polish. Reddit never succeeded there. Would be nice to see that here
Jake Lee
@josephstein Working on it!
Gabriel Friedman
@josephstein The amount of changes the site has had in the last few weeks has been nothing short of incredible. New features and UI tweaks are added daily, and he actively listens to the userbase and takes their input on said changes.
Caleb Hansen
@josephstein site could totally use some polish. Notifications are broken. Adjustments to the UI could be good (@jayclees has already made SO many, his dedication is great) and I think the site has a good base
Aakanksha Kabra
Never really understood Reddit so much. Thanks for giving us an easier and more user-friendly option. Congratulations 🚀
Jake Lee
@aakanksha_kabra Thank you!
Frank R.
@aakanksha_kabra My understanding from personally using Reddit is that Reddit has now become a place for information to be controlled by companies who were allowed to make millions of bots. They guide the conversation the way they choose and Squabbles helps us step away from that.
Caleb Hansen
@aakanksha_kabra it really is user friendly. The important thing is that we are setting guidelines and growing community in a way that considers the whole site, and that kind of going above and beyond is the squabbles way
ricoche
Launching soon!
😹 LOL
Already a squabbler. I even made a meme there 😂😂 https://squabbles.io/u/ricoche/p...
Jake Lee
@ricoche Gave me a genuine laugh!
Stephen R
Er, @jayclees are you manually checking usernames? I signed up, grabbed my username and was surprised that at first it gave me an error (so I couldn't post). Then a few minutes later, seemed to work. Interesting concept for the site. I'll be watching regardless.

Satyanarayan Prashar
Loved it. How did you mange to get the early 10k adopters? What were the traffic channels?
Anna .
@satyanarayan_prashar It can be attributed to both the Reddit blackouts and having a crazy active dev.
Max T.Pham
Congrats Jake on Squabbles' launch! Love the hybrid approach to social networking. Can't wait to dive in and join the conversation! Good luck to you & your team!
Jake Lee
@maxtpham Thank you!
Carmil
Congratulations on the launch of your social network! It sounds like fantastic platform that combines the best features of Twitter and Reddit. The ability to both follow people you love and engage in meaningful conversations is definitely a winning combination. I'm curious, how did you come up with idea for this unique concept?
Al Llamas
@carmil_bermillo Agreed! The way they combined the two platforms is genius!
Jake Lee
@carmil_bermillo This was something I personally wanted for a long time since I use both platforms. Twitter was good for following people but the UI was not the greatest at supporting conversations. So I wanted a Twitter with a more Reddit like commenting interface, and I also wanted something akin to Reddit's subs as well. So I just kind of combined the two!
Caleb Hansen
@carmil_bermillo It feels like the best of reddit and twitter, for sure. Being built on a strong foundation helps!
Carmil
@jayclees Thank you very much for your answer! I like the idea and I've already signed up too! Quick question, if you don't mind. How would you go about password resets in case users lose their passwords and they don't have emails registered as it's an optional feature? (Which I definitely LOVE, by the way!)
Altiam Kabir
squabbles is redefining social media with its combination of Twitter and Reddit. Huge congratulations on your ProductHunt launch! The clean and simple interface that facilitates meaningful conversations is impressive.
Jake Lee
@altiamkabir Appreciate it!
Rahul Bhalley
Nice work! But how do you plan to monetize? Ads or subscription?
Khim Nyang Tan
@rahulbhalley I believe Jake is working in a subscription-based model, aptly named Squabbles+
Lionel Sondy
@rahulbhalley Squabbles+ as @greenlamb said, with a Patreon page in the meantime.
Caleb Hansen
@rahulbhalley there is a subscription model coming at some point. For now (here by popular demand), inspired squabblers can donate over on patreon

Jayclees the Developer has decided the platform need to be freespeach and that being homophobic is fine as long as you dont use a slur. He has called being born LGBTQ a political movement and a wedge issue driving away conservatives.
Caleb Hansen
@hurt we love to see new faces, and get acquainted. The community has grown, and I think the ‘common enemy’ of some other sites has contributed somewhat to squabbles’ friendliness.
Rex Hargis
When I first learned of the Reddit API fiasco, I scrambled to create accounts on several different sites. I tried the others first because Squabbles was lagging behind in community size, but the UI/UX stunk and it was difficult for me to find communities and follow discussions I was interested in. Enter Squabbles! The developer is committed to finding a nice balance between Reddit and Twitter through evenly championing self-posts and communities alike. He's worked almost non-stop--I cannot count the number of small, UI/UX-friendly changes that have been made simply because the community was clamoring for them! I've never seen so many self-proclaimed lurkers feel comfortable and confident in posting their first online forum posts, which warms my heart. Squabbles is about being friendly, open and inclusive: "The Nicest Place on the Internet"!
Connor Dragon
@not_your_name I'm actually really excited about that aspect of it too! There's a little community called /s/LurkersAnon (which you're probably thinking of) who are encouraging each other to post and comment, giving each other tips on how to engage with the site and the users. It's heartwarming :)
Leontyne Sondy
@not_your_name @connor_dovah Natural born lurker here. My main motivation for leaving a review on this site was that I wanted to thank the people of /s/LurkersAnon publicly for the way they welcomed me. I had 3 comments then. No post. Now I have my first post up and my comment count is at 9. ☺️
Loops
This site has been one of the best communities I've been a part of. From reaching user number goals together and celebrating our first 20k, to the everyday 'squabbles' we have. I have felt welcomed and enjoyed being a part of this site :)
Jake Lee
@sn1per I encourage (positive) squabbling!
Lil D.
As an alternative to The Big Two, Squabbles is standing head and shoulders above the rest. It’s easy to use, doesn’t require a steep learning curve and already has an engaging and warm community atmosphere. Jake and his team are incredible at staying on top of the needs and wants of the users; in almost no time at all, he’s created a comfortable community space that actually *listens* to users, and that is a breath of fresh air. Already there are several 3rd party apps in development, and I can only wish Jake and his team the very best of luck.
Lionel Sondy
@finnvalley Good to see your lovely li'l face and your insightful, kind words here, too. ☺️
Jay Baldev
It has been an exciting journey so far for this website. Come join the wholesome communities that we are making here at squabbles.
Jake Lee
@jay_baldev We have communities for gaming, photography, and everything in between, so stop by and hang out!
