if both users have to have the app to view/respond to the emails (from what I can see) why would someone not just use Whatsapp with encrypted messaging built in?
Erez Pilosof
@_jacksmith 1. email works way better for business communication 2. don't mix business & personal 3. email address identity

🔑 Hunters please use the invite code: 'producthunt' Thanks for the hunt @nivo0o0 💬 We’ve started Hop with the vision to radically improve the way people and businesses communicate over email. We’ve made Email conversational, clutter free, fast and enabled real group collaboration over email with Hop Groups. 🔒 Today, we're excited to announce our first step in upgrading Email Privacy with Hop EEM (Encrypted Email Messaging). Privacy is a very important element of any communication (especially email). It grants you the comfort to speak, collaborate and share information freely, without worrying about cybercriminals, hackers or ‘officials’ who might be listening... We’ve designed Hop EEM to be as simple to use, you can quickly toggle between regular Email and Encrypted Email using the lock button, no codes, passwords or hustle required. When active, the message and all attachments are safely encrypted. Encrypted Messages are seamlessly visible to all participants using Hop and one tap away for non Hop users. Hop EEM works by creating a per message encryption key and splitting the key between Hop and your Email Provider, making “bad actors” access virtually impossible.

@pilosof @nivo0o0 Such a great UX! I'm like 10 times faster to reply to my emails thanks to Hop!

@pilosof This could be really interesting! Have you guys written any more about how the encryption works? There's this at the end but I was after a bit more detail... > Hop EEM works by creating a per message encryption key and splitting the key between Hop and your Email Provider, making “bad actors” access virtually impossible.

@mikesten we're in the process of finalizing the system, once we do we'll publish a full write-up. When you turn on EEM, we encrypt the message and attachments using AES256, the sent email contains only part of the encryption key plus unique identifiers plus other stuff :)

My favorite mail app by far. It really drastically increased my productivity. Thanks guys!!

Desktop app in works? This a great app but needs a desktop client also.

@androidlove on it 😉

Damn Hop is fast !!

@pilosof How can I retrieve old messages and folders within Hop? It seems the app can only sync the last 12 months and I cannot see my IMAP folders anywhere. SOS? Cheers.

10X better than any other email app. GREAT job!

Liked HOP, didn't realize Encryption is such a priority.

@hakosam our mission is to upgrade all aspects of email communication including privacy :)

Love the idea behind this—love the idea behind any and all anti-surveillance apps: if THEY are going to spy on everything we do, at least put roadblocks and landmines in the way!

This is cool!!

Who is ChatFlow? Encryption is great when you have trust and transparency behind the vendor. Can you get more info on who Guy and Erez are and why they made these great tools! I love the idea of merging email and chat in a secure app, but I think you could go much further with it! Get Snowden or Assange's paid endorsement for some real traction!

Question regarding the encryption feature - How does the user ensure Spike employees (or anyone who gets their hand on your systems) can't read peek into the encrypted messages? In other words: who has the keys, only the user's device, or you too?
Noah Mittman
Will there be a full write-up on the storage and transmission model? It's hard to say how little "cybercriminals" could glean, or even how much "officials" could subpoena, from emails with what's just here.
Erez Pilosof
@noahmittman yep, we're in the process of finalizing the system, once we do we'll publish a full write-up.
