Hey Product Hunters! As the maker of the new Soma Glass Water Bottle, I wanted to chime in about why and how we designed this collection of bottles.
3 years ago we launched Soma as an online subscription business selling beautifully designed water filters that also support charitable water projects globally. We've launched other products in the filtration space, but this is the first time we've ventured into a new category of hydration. The #1 product request has always been for a water bottle. We chose glass for the purest taste (no metal or plastic taste), and we kept the design as simple as possible. The bottle holds 17oz. of water, fits in a cup holder, is very durable, and has a bamboo cap.
Indeed, looks nice. Simple and stylish. To tell the truth, I always have problems with bottles and I couldn't select the best one for me for a long time. Or the leak and my whole bag are wet, then the elastic changes and becomes dirty, also I broke and scratched some. It seems to me that I am always unlucky with glass. This month, while quarantine, our daughter scratched the windows on our balcony so hard that the image through it is very fuzzy and shattered. So, we decided to repair scratched glass with the help of specialists who are specializing in this https://www.unscratchthesurface.... . Indeed, the result has exceeded all expectations. Recommended!
Pretty! How heavy is it when it's filled? I'm trying to keep my bag filled with a few high quality every day items but there's nothing worse than lugging around a lot of weight between work/gym/dinner/home. I'm trying to get a bit leaner.
@_pascalandy As there is only Tech, Podcasts, Games, and Books this was the only option. Maybe @rrhoover would consider something like "Products" instead of "Tech" and subcategories like "Apps" and "Goods."
@mg@_pascalandy@rrhoover going down that route can get very segmented - im sure we will have a solution soon enough!
Tech peeps gotta keep healthy too :)
@mg@rrhoover You're product looks very good, but I really don't want to see things outside startups / tech / open sources project in my sacred PH feed. Peace :)
@_pascalandy@mg@rrhoover Soma is a pretty fascinating start-up and this latest product represents more than bottle. Anyone serious about building a successful company would benefit from observing Soma, the backstory, the founders inner game, the attention to sustainable supply chain, etc. Sure, for many folks a glass jar or upcycled Kombucha bottle works, but in our consumer culture, giving people a beautiful functional product is a great way to seed social change and transition. For someone who doesn't want to look like "one of those hippies" with an old mason jar or someone who loves the grip or the sustainably sourced cap, etc.. this is a great option. Mike and the things he is supporting in the world are important -- consider the supply chain and the sustainable bamboo farms that will be supported and then how the surplus from those farms might become inspiration for more eco-regenerative products, and so on.
Also, I'd like to remind you folks what Technology actually is >>
Technology ("science of craft", from Greek τέχνη, techne, "art, skill, cunning of hand"; and -λογία, -logia) is the collection of techniques, skills, methods and processes used in the production of goods or services or in the accomplishment of objectives, such as scientific investigation.
Human technologies are not just web apps, it's the totality of our inventions across an integral framework -- democracy, religion, laptops, pancakes, orgasmic meditation, MDMA, confession, music, ti-86 calculators, existentialism, you get the picture...
I think the bigger point here is that the illusion of the world of the profane becomes instantly sacred when we, to quote Steve Jobs, "think different", or the ancient wisdom traditions to "repent" ("think different" by the way is a definition of "repent").
Subject: Software First Stuff (SFS)
@anthonyadams@mg I agree with what you are saying. I know you guys from a Tim Ferriss posts about 3 years ago. Again you have a solid product and this is not the point.
I believe that on PH, we need to draw a line on the sand. Else the broad definition of "tech" will make PH tech feed useless. You know like a zoo. What’s your POV @rrhoover ?
I would say that most folks that are checking out PH (like other check out the New-York Time & BuzzFeed) are looking for Software First Stuff (SFS). We are not looking for a commodities with cool feat. I go to Kickstarter and IndieGogo for this.
Also, IMHO, PH is not about startups (the way to launch a sustainable business) but SFS.
SFS = an application that I can run on a computer/phone.
Cheers!
Pascal
Hunted this because I've been a huge fan of Soma's products to date, starting with their first glass carafe filter. @mikedelponte and team have been hard at work for a long time to bring this stylish and solidly built water bottle to market. No fluff and frills or worries of BPA, just glass and a grip. Love it.
@mikedelponte Thanks, because ... I'm not really sure why, maybe the design. But I have a STRONG wish to buy this bottle. I think it could help me to drink more water, and therefore, having a healthier lifestyle :x
can't wait for this product - need to drink more water. while i'm biased b/c i know the makers who are excellent, and am a backer of the company - know this is going to be awesome to keep in my backpack at all times and stay hydrated and healthy :).
I am the only one that thinks $30 for a glass bottle is a lot? :O also how do you see if there's water left since the glass is covered? Here in spain you get really nice glass bottle with Vichy for example: http://imgur.com/Qv9f3Y7
Soma's first water filter takes center stage on my kitchen counter and i cant wait to get my hands on this bottle! @mikedelponte has stayed true to his mission of high quality products and social impact.
This got me interested.. product does look nice! I'm curious about the glass since it plays such an important piece in keeping water free from plastic pollution. Is the glass "glass beaker" grade or something else? As for weight, how much does it weigh without water? Do you guys make it yourself or import the glass?
