@alexlitreev Considering how often VPNs providers lie about keeping logs, can you say more about how you can "prove" that you're not keeping any? Your website has no further information about this and no privacy policy, as far as I can tell.
And have any third parties audited your service to authenticate your claims?
@jordankrueger Hi! It's a great question. Yes, as you fairly mentioned, we do not keep logs. How we can prove it? Well, it's pretty simple - since we do not control decentralized architecture where data is being stored. For more, please checkout Sentinel blockchain whitepaper: https://sentinel.co/whitepaper/
It's a blockchain based on top of Cosmos SDK, which was subject to public audit multiple times.
As for third party audit of the technologies we're using – under the hood we got open-source VPN solutions (Wireguard and V2Ray & Outline yet to come). All three are publicly audited by multiple independent researchers. And blockchain part is obviously publicly available as open source project.
@itsempdy well, as our app is more like sort of an open market of DVPN traffic – yes, technically some of dVPN community nodes able to do so. However, there is also some other things to be considered:
1. dVPN nodes don't have any link to your identity – they're dealing with abstract blockchain entities which aren't linked to you anyhow. They don't know who you are, they don't know your credit card data, email & etc.
2. dVPN nodes are used by lots of users at the same time, all of them are also disguised by blockchain just as you are. Keeping any logs of activity would be pointless.
3. Most traffic nowadays is encrypted with SSL. Our app do not enforce trust to any additional SSL certificates, which makes most of the traffic that goes through the node look like digital garbage. You won't be able to decrypt it.
4. Just like on any other VPN – you choose whom you trust. In our case, you don't need to trust app vendor, which is crucial. However, it's better to choose trustworthy dVPN node.
Ultimate solution that will 100% guarantee that you won't have any logs kept – spin up your own dVPN node (really easy, one single script). In that case you can be 200% sure.
Hi, Product Hunters!
Aleksandr, CEO of SOLAR Labs here. I am proud to announce our first launch at Product Hunt. Meet SOLAR dVPN — world’s first truly decentralized & blockchain-based VPN!
You may say that it is just another VPN but with a different “branded” design. Well, no :-)
While other VPN services such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN and others are being blocked in some countries, our one continues to work. Probably you’ll ask why. That’s because of the way we’ve designed it.
As the app is based on top of the publicly-available decentralized Sentinel blockchain network, it also means that we do not have any critical centralized old-school APIs like others have. For example, popular VPN apps are being blocked in Russia by their API being blocked. It means that the centralized VPN app itself is not even able to reach their vendor and fetch information about VPN-servers. Well, that’s not a case for us — we simply don’t have any.
SOLAR dVPN have such APIs decentralized — there’s hundreds (or thousands already) servers all across the globe, managed by the community, helping our app to get information about available VPN-servers. And yes, talking of VPN-servers, those managed by the community too! So you can pretty fairly tell that SOLAR dVPN is a sort of a market of VPN-servers.
So, here are fundamental differences and advantages:
😎 Based. Blockchain-based. Don’t get your favorite VPN app banned in your home country, don’t be afraid of getting disconnected or surveillanced while traveling to certain countries with problems with freedom of speech & etc.
✅ No subscription plans. You pay only for the GBs consumed. No bullshit, no need to pay monthly fee or commit to a subscription you always forget to cancel on time.
🚫 No logs. And we can prove it.
🔥 High quality, low cost. Less than $0.01 per GB of bandwidth.
💸 Many ways to top-up. Use in-app purchases or deposit crypto – it’s up to you.
🇰🇵 Is Big Brother watching you? No shit, he does. But our SOLAR dVPN is available worldwide, even in really badly regulated countries like Turkmenistan. We’re working upon availability in North Korea (A joke? Damn, who knows…)
It'd be awesome to get feedback from you so please feel free to share it or ask any product-related questions 💚
Cheers,
Aleksandr.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: What’s the difference between SOLAR dVPN and any other classic VPN?
A: It’s all about decentralization. It brings a lot of perks: provable no-log policy, more reliable in terms of censorship circumvention, has no backdoors by design (c’mon, the whole blockchain is open source).
Q: So does it mean it can’t be blocked either by the provider or by the government?
A: Exactly! The only solution to restrict or block decentralised VPN is to cut off the wires of the Internet for the whole country (google North Korea’s experience).
Q: Does SOLAR dVPN log any user activity?
A: No and it never will
Q: Is it free?
A: No, it’s not. Because if something is free — you’re the product.
From behalf of myself, I clearly remember ?makers way, especially @alexlitreev 's one, from the very first products (tg proxies, centralized VPN, etc) to nowadays point. It was a huge jump forward and up, so I am pretty happy I am involved into promotion of a product (to say more: ecosystem) with exponential growth potential, and clear Mission. F-word to censure, F-word to dictatorship
@vladislav_roslyak1 I know, mate, you can't speak loud about any sympathies to crypto-based products (😁 ), but you can shout out loud about your (and @vivaldibrowser 's) appreciate of Freedom, Privacy and so on – so I'd like to invite you to pay attention to SOLAR dVPN launch today ;)
@vladislav_roslyak1 thanks so much! Hope to collaborate one day finally: with different tools in our hands, but we share the same principles of what do we want to provide to users and what should we secure & protect
@monsterjeep well, we have an iOS application and have much bigger network of dVPN nodes. Not to mention that our network based on Cosmos SDK, which makes it significantly faster and cheaper.
I am pleased to be a part of this endeavor. It makes me happy to contribute to a VPN app that is genuinely decentralized and gives users complete freedom.
I've been using the SOLAR app after a swift command from my son who is very much a believer in the decentralized space. The cost of SOLAR is a fraction of any of the regular VPNs. Which is perfect because ever since getting the internet installed (1995!) I was concerned about my ISP simply logging all my data, selling it, then have advertising agencies bombard me. So I'm a big fan and supporter of the work SOLAR are doing.
@new_user_16720225e23f641b7 GoPro team once was questioned: "what if I take your camera and run into tornado?", and they replied "We highly DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU to do this, but if you do, then share us a video please". Take care of yourself and we hope you'll enjoy SOLAR dVPN!
