Neat concept! The fascinating part isn't the "look at object overlaid over physical world" but rather the concept of anchoring digital information to some physical place. We'll need these kinds of platforms to define the medium, but I'd love to see some adaptation of web technology to tie digital content (URLs?) to physical locations (GPS? Beacons?) and have that exist in some openly crawlable form. You can then view that content in Snapchat, but your Siri voice-enabled assistant also knows when you're walking by that there's something anchored there and tell you more about it. As a creator, I wouldn't have to worry about integrating 5-15 emerging AR platforms, and rather allow competition further up the stack. Before that, we all have to compete at the platform stack first to really nail the medium.

When is Instagram going to copy this?

Art is a great beachhead into becoming the defacto platform for Augmented attractions, I can see a lot of tourist sites being interested in sponsoring, creating, but also regulating content that is hosted on Snapchat, but viewed on their property. A lot of interesting questions to run headfirst into.

I think this concept is interesting but also hilarious. The fact that people will be gathering around an area that has something only viewable by users of Snapchat will be confusing to outsiders. It will be a different kind of interaction among users but I am looking forward to the new feature.

I like Jeff Koons. I don't like SnapChat.

Why do I feel sad after watching this? Maybe it's because instead of using their naked eyes to enjoy the sunshine and the bright blue sky and the lush green grass, I see a bunch of humans staring at their screens and getting mesmerized.

This is just part of Snaps' grand plan for AR/VR - I'm excited to see where this goes!

Very excited for this — seems non-coincidental that it is timed so closely to Oculus Connect, where Facebook will likely announce more Facebook Spaces products. Art is a quiet predictor and shared art instillations represent a broader trend of virtual spaces that blend with the real world. World Lenses were merely naturalizing AR, and Snapchat Art will drill-deeper into this paradigm by bridging art with the real world. This is where Spiegel and Snapchat exceeds. Snap might normalize virtual spaces before Facebook — excited to learn more about both. As Josh Constine points out, Snapchat Art may also become a new viral growth opportunity like Pokemon Go.

Awesome product launch, but still not sure how this going to help with Snap's growth problem. Seems like a fun feature, but I don't think it will be enough to put Snap's DAU above Instagrams. I think the angle here might be to tie this to brand sponsorships. I could see Coca-Cola or Walmart AR landmarks popping up around town in the coming months. The increased revenue will most definitely help the Snap's share price.

Ive played with it just now and its great. Next level geofilters. People posting snaps of the art to snapmap soon - pulling other people to the same location. I can see the potential. Saw the piece in Toronto and in Central Park from the UK .... using some trickery

What i like about such products is that we don't need any special glasses, your smartphone is all you need.
