New Snapchat now separates the social from the media. This means that the Chats and Stories from your friends are on the left side of Snapchat, and the Stories from publishers, creators, and the community are on the right.

The biggest update in this release is the separation of social (i.e. your friends) and media (i.e. entertainment content), similar to the rumors that Facebook might do the same to their coveted feed by tucking brand content behind an Explore feed (see @sarahintampa's TC article on this). Side note: I found it interesting that @evanspiegel introduced the feature in the promo video. Previous videos were typical flashy music videos showcasing new features.

@sarahintampa @evanspiegel @rrhoover It feels like this promo video wasn't made for snapchat's users but more for the press / investors in mind (seeing as the redesign was also announced in that earnings report thing a few weeks back).

@sarahintampa @evanspiegel @rrhoover It would be interesting to see how the ad revenue affects this change. As now number of media ads/snap story clicks and views will surely go down a lot of folks only interested in a social private network. (my assumption!)

Remember Facebook Paper? Created in 2014, the app radically changed how Facebook was consumed via a magazine like experience. People felt it was competitive to Flipboard, given Facebook's attention to news and its relevance in that market. What if Facebook has continued down the Paper path? Snapchat's current release is basically if Facebook Paper basically changed its layout. In paper, you have no choice but to focus on friend content in full screen. It was never fully monetized, but even ads felt "native" to the medium and forced people to consume them. Snapchat's inherent advantage is its ability to use its mobile generated content to keep eyeballs on screen. Ads have a higher engagement and feel like a part of the experience. This redesign emphasizes UCG but allows ads to just be a part of the big picture, rather than something that feels jarring. The stickiest experiences are those in which you have imprinted a part of your identity. Facebook moved away from their advantage of friend content in favor of attracting eyeballs on content in general. This may prove to be their biggest mistake, becoming more like a Microsoft (sic. Ben Thompson) rather than what they could have been, back in 2014.

Love the layout. Is there still gonna be an easy-to-access alphabetized list of the people I follow where I can watch their stories? That's really the main thing that was holding me back from switching to IG Stories. I'm a loyal snapchattee to the extent that to this day, I've still never posted a single story outside of SC, but the simplicity of snapchat's story findability has always been its winning feature for me.

Snapchat likes to do things their own way, and I respect that, but I think someone should clue them in on what a real redesign is...

Those screenshots barely look different to the older editions of the app. They've just moved where your friends' Stories are. Not much of a redesign is it?

@thejfkshow I understand that, but this had been hyped as a massive change. I'm not sure that moving Stories from one place to another is quite as major as we were led to believe.

@dr_motley - I completely agree. I love this change, but it isn't massive. The app works virtually the same except that you swipe a different direction to get to your friends. It's more of a philosophy change than a major update. Still good, but when you say "biggest update ever" people are going to be looking for major changes and they won't find them.

@dr_motley I was gonna say the same thing. At least with the examples, it doesn't look like a "huge" design change. But I'd like to see it in action before completely saying that.

this is simply a regression to the old way it existed. discover was the only place that brand content existed (and nobody ever visited it). they mixed the content because they tried to get advertisers to capitalize upon their platform. however their ad products are super expensive...so nobody used it. interested in seeing how they plan to make revenue. their filters and lenses could be all that works.

Hard for me to square this change with their efforts to onboard DR advertisers and make the platform work on that front. I imagine ads will be more jarring slipped in between friends and less so in Explore/Discover/whatever we're calling the publisher tab?

Evan’s smart to double down on friends - it’s Snapchat’s best differentiatior from Insta (no pressure from likes, comments, perfectly filtered content, posting at peak times, etc). wonder how they will separate “creators” in discover from “friends” in chat? people who are mutually friends with each other = chat screen? if so, viewership of stories is definitely going to go down for creators...

@techteague I had the same question and read in this article that if someone follows you back it's considered a friend, and if it doesn't follow you'll see their story on the discover page.

Good move but they should've launched this on the Thanksgiving with a little flash sale offer over the spectacles and market it. Sort of missed opportunity.

In my opinion, Snapchat should work on getting Android fixed and up-to-date instead of adding more. They rarely even push to beta on Android, and I'd be impressed if they push this new update to Android.

This just another pivot and pitch to investors and to keep the evaluation higher. Don't forget if there's a free product in the market meaning that the users are the product themselves. Get more insight into people lives, no privacy whatsoever and selling back the data to the giants (Google)
