Know before you go. Travel the world, or plan the perfect workcation. Roamer is a chrome extension that helps you find Airbnbs in neighborhoods with fast internet.
Love everything about this idea. It's such a problem when booking an Airbnb, VRBO, etc. to not know if you'll be able to rely on the internet speed there. The idea of a Chrome extension is a clever solution.
I had a blast building this extension! Our goal was to get v1 of Roamer out to the world as quickly as possible, so the extension is backed by a simple Express app running on Heroku and using Postgres for our DB. That made it super easy to stand up our server side without any headache. I've also been impressed with how far you can get by leveraging Heroku's free tier π€
About three years ago, I built a simpler extension that improved Airbnb's pricing UI, so that experience and its codebase completely supercharged the development speed of the Roamer extension.
We're really pleased with our global dataset for Roamer and how v1 turned out. Hope you enjoy it, too!
I was frustrated while trying to find Airbnbs that I could work remotely from. It's a pain to message every host asking for their internet speeds and hope for a response. I realized that if I could at least filter down to the areas with good internet, my messages could be much more targeted.
After some searching, I found a great dataset courtesy of Google. Every time someone uses the Google speed test widget, their location is tracked and the internet speed data is recorded. This year I had been planning a trip to French Polynesia, but using this data I could see that they do not have fast internet! Luckily I was able to pivot and instead found a great place in Hawaii.
I teamed up with David to make this process WAY easier. Now with the Roamer chrome extension, you can see the expected internet speeds whenever you are viewing an Airbnb listing. Safe travels, and let us know what you think!
